I've been having solid food lately - this has got to stop. Every time I eat solid food I think I'll be ok, but then hours, days, weeks later, it just happens again and I'm back at square one again, in pain and hoping I'm not ruptured. I miss food, and I wonder if I'll ever really be able to enjoy a meal again without paying horribly painful consequences for it. I'm tanked up on generic "ensure" in the fridge, for now. But going on even a few of those a day gets 1) expensive, 2) tiring to the tastebuds, and 3) still leaves my body rather unsatisfied. Sure there are vitamins, but not enough caloric content - 250kcal a can leaves me sated for a few hours, but then I'm back to feeling shaky and exhausted, my body telling me "we need more than this to get by, buddy - we need fuel if this ship is going to keep on flying". This is going to be rough. I'm starting college in less than two weeks, after waiting way too long... I really, really hope my stomach doesn't act as too much of a distraction.

Hi, I am having a flare up right now,but you sound like you are getting this so often and at your age, looking forward to college, and having this INTENSELY PAINFUL AND DISRUPTIVE diverticulitis must be wearing on you. I dont know if doxycycline is enough to completely clear it up. I was on doxy for 3 weeks for an infection in my eyes, and I still got a big ad flare up. I am on 2 different antibiotics, and quit the doxy for now. I feel so bad for you,as going to class and sitting for so long in classes sounds intense. Could you go to er and get different antibiotics,to knock it out of the ballpark for awhile?I m worried about you!!! That not eating is not good(I did that a year ago,and now again,so I get it.Let us know-we care about you.Thank god for this site, dont you agree? We all need each other through these painful times.Korynne

Wanted to add something.I drink alot of ensure also, and I went to er good hospital, and dr. said ensure when having a flare up,may be too rich aand creamy, and aggravate situation!!!! Sorry to say that,as I have been getting shaky, and losing too much weight during flare ups,so it does double duty for me.Helps the shakes from hunger, and keeps some weight on me!!Now what can we do????This really sucks, but have to admit my tummy feels a bit better,as I didnt have one since this morning.Anyone with advice from anyone experiencing this would be appreciated.I'm shaky right now,I'm so hungry.YIKES!!

Fat content seems to bother me. It might be that creamy stuff you have to drink. check the content. I know I used to think it was milk but then it turned out to be the fat in milk (even 2%!). It's among one of the "high residue" foods. Anything that leaves a trail (in soluable and soluable fibre, animal fat, etc) is a real no-no when you have a flare. Anything that has no fibre and will be bland and not a challenge to digest (jello is great, homemade white bread, olive oil and multi vitamins) B12 is the most important! (think spinach) and taking a prenatal vitamin won't hurt either! I'm not kidding! It has all the things you need daily, plus extra folic acid, B12 and iron. When you do get through your flare, build fibre back up very slowly! I double the time it supposed to take. Adult males and females need 25 to 30 grams a day in fibre. After a flare you should be getting about 5 to 10. Take two weeks to slowly build up to 15grams...then two more weeks for another 5 grams. This is working for me and this advice came straight from my health nurse. I don't like sounding preachy, but I would hate to think that anything I had to say maybe could help and I didn't say it. I know that you sure helped me just by caring enouhg to answer my ramblings...thank you...plain past with olive oil and arrowroot cookies...homemade tapioca pudding, vanilla pudding, oatmeal (not the real stuff and not instant...I think it's called one minute?)...good luck with your studies! ( I had watery bowels the whole time!...I like that better than constipation though!)
