Near the community where I live, there is a parent support group that meets every month. This was extremely helpful and provided me with a wealth of information and resources. When I found out 3 years ago that my son had asperger's syndrome, I buried my head in the sand for about 1 1/2 years and didn't do anything to enlighten friends, family, or the school about this diagnosis. After joining the support group, I found out how important it was it inform those that needed to know. Our school stated they didn't know anything about that diagnosis and said they have never had anyone in their school with it before. I laughed and told them that I was certain they had, they just had not recognized that was the situation. My son is very big, about 6 foot 2 inches. However, this does not keep other kids from bullying him around. He was put into a closet last year and locked in there for a length of time. He had his sister at the same school last year to help protect him; she is in college this year so he is on his own. This is very frustrating and it saddens my heart that he has to go through this type of treatment.
