annoying friends Mood
Tuesday, February 3, 2009 | A Venting story
So I'm sure you have those childless friends that have no clue.  Well mine is also a colleague.  We were grad students together and we now teach similar things and are both part time at the same community college (she's also full time at the University where my husband is).  She's my oldest friend in this town.  She is SOOOOO EXCITED by my pregnancy. LOL!

However, I can't get it through to her how unpleasant it is EVERY time I see her for the first words out of her mouth to be "OH MY GOD! YOU ARE HUGE!"  I've tried to explain to her that I don't like it.  I have weight issues already, so it just reminds me of them.  I remind her how she felt before she lost 70 lbs.  And believe me I can never comment about her weight b/c of her own personal issues.  So she tries to come out with, "oh but you're supposed to be big".

She tried to tell me to tell this little baby he could come anytime now so she could hold him and we could go drinking!  I and one of my former students (now her current) were screaming no.  I'm only 28 weeks and while he would probably survive, he's still better inside most definitely.  Born now would mean probably a minimum of 2 months in NICU.  She's just like... oh he'd be fine.   This is a woman who teaches Anatomy and Physiology, she knows there is no surfactant in the lungs until 8 months!  Oh and as far as the drinking goes, she's 38, she should be beyond that.

Ugh, ok, just had to vent.  Thanks for reading.

WOw she sounds really insensitive! I was looking at your picture b4 I came to the journal and was saying you dont look bad at all to be 28 wks..I would so ignore her comments-and NO BABY DONT COME OUT YET!! The best part of having your baby is to bring it home with you not pick it up from the hospital at 2 or more months old!

I was thinking I should respond to her with something equally obvious every time she says it. Something like "Oh my God! You're black!" or "Oh my God! You wear glasses!" Last pregnancy we had a deal that every time she wanted to touch my belly, I would grab her butt. ;-) She never did understand that she was invading personal space. She claimed she was touching the baby. Yeah, but I'm between you and the baby!

LOL...you are too funny! I like the every time you touch my belly, I am going to grab your butt thing!!!! That is great...would work with all those strangers out there who think it is fine to touch our bellies! :)
I love the comments about my size and how the baby must be ready to come out any day now...don't people understand that we are still sensitive about our size...pregnant or not? And as far as the baby coming out early...we all worked so hard to get to this point, we are not rushing it out...we just want the healthiest babies possible...so cook on little one! :)
Oh, and I think you look great for 28 weeks!

I can't stand those kinds of comments. I have several friends that are totally clueless and say the most inappropriate things. I try not to get upset, because it really is naivety, but it still makes my blood boil. I have a co-worker who, before every weekend, says, "Don't go into labor this weekend!" And every time I say, kind of callously, "I really hope I don't because that would be very bad." I know he has no concept of what going into labor at 28 weeks means for the baby, but it still upsets me.
Take care and enjoy the third trimester!

I'm sorry that your friend is being rude about your weight. I don't understand people sometimes. Today I told my sister that I was planning on getting my hair done again before the baby shower and she said "you aren't cutting it short again are you??" I personally like my hair long but I let my stylist cut it above my shoulders last time and you know what, I loved it. So much easier! Now, I can't say that looking HUGE is every helpful.....not today. You seem to handle it well though, you have a great sence of humor about it.

    Too Funny!!
The drinking thing reminds me of my mother and all of our friends. They should really sit in on an AA meeting, they may just be surprised how many things they have in common with 'those people'.
At 28 weeks, I think baby should keep on cooking INSIDE you not the NICU. And I failed A&P!! lol.
