    • About Me

I'm 56 years old, married to a wonderful man, and living in Va. We don't have children - our cat Sam was our child and she passed almost 2 years ago. Thought we were ready to adopt another, but I'm just not ready. I work in Business Development as an executive assistant. I can't wait for the day I can retire and do something more creative - 30 years in an office, as good as the jobs have been, is not what I want to do with the second half of my life! Losing my cat Samantha to lymphoma after 17 years was very difficult for me - it has left a big hole in my heart. Shortly after that, I lost my dad (92) and my ex-husband (60), and my mother-in-law (91). Needless to say, 2007 was a VERY difficult year. Right now I'm suffering from what I think its IBS but it has not been definitively diagnosed. Trying to find some support and suggstions here. Recently having problems with a hiatal hernia.

      Type: Loss of a Pet

Three weeks ago I lost my beloved cat of 17 years. Even though my husband has been wonderfully supportive (he misses her too), it has become difficult for me to accept my loss.

      Treatments

      Crying Working / Worked
      Prayer Somewhat Helpful
I have prayed several times and sometimes it helps if I'm quiet enough to listen.
      Psychotherapy Not Working
I did see a counselor for a brief period before Samantha passed away because I knew the time was coming. I did not feel she helped and I discontinued.
      Talking Working / Worked
I mostly talk to my husband and he's been very helpeful. When I feel "stuck" in my grief he'll say "talk to me."

      Treatments

      Breathing Exercises Somewhat Helpful
      Positive Thinking Somewhat Helpful
    • Open Hemorrhoids

I'm facing surgery for hemorroids and want to get as much unbiased information as possible!

    • Open Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

      Treatments

      Bentyl Working / Worked
The only thing that seems to work and even that doesn't work 100% of the time. Still so far it's the best bet for me.
      High Fiber Diet Somewhat Helpful
I'm not sure it really makes a difference.
      Librax Somewhat Helpful
      Miralax Working / Worked
I took this for about a week and it made my stools very soft if you want to call them stools! Everything moved out quickly, but i disliked my bowel habits not being my "normal" self. Still my husband has recommended I try it again as I think I had less episodes of stomach pain when I was on Miralax.
    • Open Hiatal Hernia

I've been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia, and while it hasn't bothered me in the past year, all of a sudden it does now. I'm on Protonix (daily) but now I can't drink coffee without discomfort. I've been told it's a "small" hiatal hernia and surgery is rare, but I need to learn how to manage it now. Which foods I should avoid etc. I'm rather surprised Pepcid Complete doesn't work as well a it used to either. Guess I'm in for a life-style change. Hello and good wishes to everyone in the group!

      Treatments

      Antacids Somewhat Helpful
Doesn't seem to work for this as well as it does for regular indgestion.
      Pepto-Bismol Somewhat Helpful
Doesn't work as well as I'd hoped.
      Prevacid Not Working
I'm allergic - break out in hives.
      Protonix Working / Worked
I have taken this for about a year and it has worked very well. But now something else seems to be going on as it is not preventing discomfort.
