I enjoy reading, sewing, textile artistry. One of the things I'm really into is making socks, the more brilliantly-colored the better. (I just love self-striping yarn!) I work as a newspaper writer/editor and also do volunteer work publishing a newsletter for a community arts group.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQa... This a 5 part documentary about people similar to myself. There are NO coincidences. I got my degree in Art, just the same as them, from just the same professors in Art, at Kent State U. in Kent, Ohio, in the snow country. Mark and Jerry graduated 2 years before I arrived at KSU as a transfer junior, 3rd year in the School of Art, KSU.

Unfortunately because there are more males than females diagnosises with AS... books on the topic written from a woman who has AS and her struggles with relationships will be harder to find.. but AS relationship stuff is good to read when it is written by someone who has it because of simular situations and barriers, etc. which is why i always recomment the 2 chapter in "The Richter's Scale" the chapter on his sexual relationships and interaction with females is very good.. I have just started my own AS book after being begged and encourged by the IASG (local group) in my area) Walt

    • Close Asperger Syndrome

I had never heard of Asperger's Syndrome until a friend told my husband about the condition. I graduated from high school before Asperger's Syndrome was commonly understood and diagnosed so I am only just learning about what it means to be an "Aspie."

      Treatments

Avoid Certain Foods / Chemicals Working / Worked
Due to tactile defensiveness, certain food textures repulse me. As a child when I was forced to eat them I could not swallow them without gagging.
      Meditation Working / Worked
My husband has taken classes at the Nyingma Center in Berkeley for some time, and I took my first one with him about one month ago. I am relatively new to meditation.
      Pets Working / Worked
Throughout my life, my cats have loved me unconditionally. And becauase we share the same distaste for loud noise and discord, I've found that my cats are effective as early-warning "peace barometers." A home that is suitable for my cat is a home that is suitable for me.
      Reading Working / Worked
When a close friend suggested to me that I have AS, the very first place I turned was to look for books on the subject. This has always been my way. I always know that whatever I want to find out, chances are that there's a book that was written about the subject.
Support from Friends & Family Working / Worked
In June 2007, a close friend suggested to my husband that I might have Asperger Syndrome. He has been very supportive and, like me, has been learning all he can. His unconditional love and acceptance mean a lot to me.
      Writing Working / Worked
I have always communicated better in writing than in spoken speech so it is perhaps not surprising that I'm a newspaper reporter. When I learned I have AS, I wrote an article that appeared in my local newpspaper. It was my official "coming out." Since then, I have written several columns about issues that I face as an adult on the autism spectrum. I am hoping that other adults who had no prior knowledge of AS will hopefully gain greater understanding and a reassurance about themselves.
