NYC Cigarette Tax Mood
Wednesday, June 4, 2008

The new tax on cigs went into effect to day in NYC.

I was in the drug store and stood behind someone as they forked over $8.97 for a pack!

I have never wanted to dance and laugh and cheer in celebration of being an ex-smoker as much as I did at that moment. Thank goodness! Whew!

Anyways, the government says it's a way to get people to quit, but in my humble opinion it's just a way to get more money, they know that most smokers are not going to quit, they are just gonna suck it up and deal, just like they always have.

I'm just glad I'm not one of those people anymore!

WOOT!

I aggree with you there that hiking up the tax doesn't make people quit. It just takes more money away from other things they want. I know, i am still a smoker. At least I live in KY and cigs are only $3 a pack.

In Canada (at least 5 months ago when I was smoking) cigs were over $9 for a name brand of smokes. If they wanted people to stop smoking maybe they should take them off the shelves and not sell em anymore... not take advantage of people's addictions and make them broke addicts. It's still hard for me for some reason but I'm glad that I am not a smoker WOOT WOOT!!

I guess it bugs me that "sin taxes" are widely accepted but try calling it "addiction taxes" and see who starts sweating bullets. Let's start taxing little Hollywood starlets and the subsequent paparazzi for taking up media space...Britney Spears and Paris Hilton immediately come to mind. Let's set up a tax system for paparazzi and their quest PER PICTURE that is on par with tobacco tax and see who's worth chasing.

where i live cigarettes are i think 11.00 a pack some places and my neighbour rolls her own with pouches of tobacco so that is like almost 2 packs per pouch she will go through a pouch in less than 2 days and she is supposed to quit she has basically no lung function left or very little she is on pills and inhalers.

i wish the tobacco companies could see what the addiction does to folks like her and yes no matter what the price this woman will pay because she is addicted. I am so glad i don't smoke never did.
