    • Close Crohn's Disease & Ulcerative Colitis

I've had Crohn's for about 20 years, finally properly diagnosed in 2000. Had surgery in December 2000, was in remission until recently. Now on scary drugs to try to avoid more surgery.

      Treatments

      Azathioprine Not Working
Really bad reaction. Fever, vomiting, elevated blood pressure and heart rate. Had to stop treatment.
      Prednisone Working / Worked
Seems to be working well. Am having some trouble with leg and foot cramps.
      Purinethol Too Soon to Tell
So far have not had a bad reaction, as I did to the Azathioprine. Keeping my fingers crossed.
    • Close Alopecia Areata

I have had alopecia areata on and off for about 20 yrs. Over the last couple of years, it progressed to universalis. Now, probably because of the Prednisone, my hair is coming back. At this point, it is still pretty patchy and straggly. I'm hoping it will come back to the point where I don't have to wear a hat.

      Treatments

      Purinethol Working / Worked
Have been taking Purinethol which is an immune suppressant for my Crohns Disease. Almost as soon as I started to take it my hair started to come back. I now have a full head of hair although its not as thick as it was. I still have very little body hair however. Unfortunately Purinethol can have some really evil side effects liver damage increased risk of cancer and I have to get my blood tested frequently.
    • Open Menopause

I am a 51-year-old married woman with one adult son. I have recently started having menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes and sleeplessness. So far, I haven't tried any treatments. I am taking Prednisone and Purinethol for Crohn's Disease.

    • Open Financial Challenges

I am a 51-year-old small business owner. I am married with one grown son. (My husband and I run the business together. We had to declare bankruptcy and lost our house several years ago after he lost his job and I had my hours cut way back on the job I had then. We both have medical issues. We earn barely enough to get by and can't afford things like dental care and new glasses. Would like to get some advice from people in the same position.

      Treatments

      Budgeting Somewhat Helpful
It's kind of hard to budget when your income is inconsistent, but we do try. We try to put enough away each day to divide amongst the bills at the end of the month. Somethings it works; sometimes it doesn't.
      Credit Counseling Somewhat Helpful
Wasn't really a big help, since our financial difficulties at the time were the result of a sudden huge drop in income.
Cut Up Credit Cards Working / Worked
Had to give up all our credit cards when we declared bankruptcy. Haven't gotten any new ones.
      Debt Consolidation Not Working
Didn't work because we didn't have enough money coming in at the time to cover even minimal payments.
Filing for Bankruptcy Working / Worked
It was a horrible thing to do, but it got us out of an impossible situation. The worst thing was losing our house.
