    • About Me

I am a student at Indiana University. I have two classes left before I get my degree! I went to school to be an English teacher, but due to my back pain that is no longer an option. I am finishing up college online. I am an only child, but I think I turned out alright. I love humor and find it everywhere, even in myself. I am easily entertained; I'm like a big little kid, and proud of it. I enjoy reading and watching the History Channel, I love learning. I'm a dork.

    • Interests

I love music. Big fan of The Beatles, Dylan, and old girl groups. I'll listen to anything if you let me. I also love my ferrets and my puppy. I'm a humongous fan of Harry Potter, but I do like "adult" books, too. I also enjoy making jewelry.

    • Close Chronic Pain

I herniated a disc four years ago and had the disc operated on. The pain came back with more intensity a year out of surgery. I then had my spine fused at the L5-S1 level, and after 6 months had the hardware removed. The last surgery, a small one, really put me over the edge as far as pain goes. I now have "failed back syndrome."

      Treatments

      Cymbalta Somewhat Helpful
I switched over to this from wellbutrin. I can't tell a difference in pain, but I can tell you that I am more willing to stick around and try to live my life.
      Flexeril Working / Worked
These worked for awhile, but I've built up a tolerance. I use skelaxin now
      Heat Working / Worked
This alleviates some of the pain from back spasms.
      Hydrocodone Somewhat Helpful
This has worked for me before after surgeries, but no longer helps my pain.
      Lidoderm Not Working
I tried these, but they did not do much for my pain, only numbed my skin
      Marijuana Somewhat Helpful
I've been self medicating for years now. This really eases my mind and does help with pain. It also helps with my sanity as I am confined to my home at 23 years old.
      Morphine Not Working
I tried Kadian, but I didn't like them. They did little for my pain.
      Nerve Blocks Not Working
I've tried these in the past with no luck.
      Oxycodone Working / Worked
This is what I take now. I have had panic attacks on these meds so I have to take xanax to reverse that and then I was taking other stuff to wake me up doing the day.
      Physical Therapy Working / Worked
I've done this a few times, but I want to get back into it after my next surgery
    • Close Depression

I have depression that is linked to chronic pain in my lower back. There have been times when I would rather not live at all than live with this pain everyday. I have tried different meds, combinations of meds, and have found meds I hated. I am currently just using cymbalta and it is helping me want to stick around.

      Treatments

      Cymbalta Working / Worked
I like cymbalta because it does not affect my sex drive like other meds have. I also don't have severe mood swings like I used to.
      Psychotherapy Working / Worked
It always helps to talk to someone.
      Wellbutrin Somewhat Helpful
This helped a little, but in the long run gave me worse mood swings than ever. I'd have extreme lows on wellbutrin.
      Zoloft Somewhat Helpful
This worked, but I killed my libido.
    • Open Back Pain

Chronic pain. I'm on my 7th surgery.

      Treatments

      Bedrest Working / Worked
This is about the only thing I could do for awhile. I spend a lot of time laying down.
      Cortisone (Injection) Not Working
These don't help me at all, but they do help some people
      Darvon Not Working
I had a horrible reaction to this medication, but it did relieve some pain.
      Epidural Injection Not Working
I never had luck, but I did get a staph infection from one round. I have heard wonderful things from others about these shots though, people that swear by them
      Fentanyl Somewhat Helpful
This worked great after my spine was fused. I used it with hydrocodone.
      Flexeril Working / Worked
I built up a tolerance to these, and they quit helping my back spasms. I use skelaxin now.
      Heat Working / Worked
      Helps with muscle spasms
      Hydrocodone Somewhat Helpful
Worked great after surgeries but is no longer strong enough to take care of my pain.
      Morphine Not Working
I hated Kadian, I still had a lot of pain with this medication
      Oxycodone Working / Worked
Works great for my pain, but has side effects that I hate (tiredness and anxiety) and I have to take other meds just to balance out this one.
      Physical Therapy Working / Worked
I am ready to get stronger, but have to wait until my next surgery is over
Spinal Cord Stimulator Working / Worked
I am doing the trial right now, and I love this thing. I think I want a permanent one implanted.
      Stretching Working / Worked
Yoga is great, but only if you are able to do the moves. I modify them for myself. I haven't been able to do yoga since January though.
    • Open Eating Disorders

I began having food issues when I was 16. I was anorexic, but then I got hungry and became bulimic. I am 23 now and I like to think I'm over EDs, but I still struggle. I have chronic back pain and throwing up only makes it worse, so I try to be good. Also, I am on a great deal of painkillers, which only make me lose weight. It's scary for me now to gain the weight back.

      Treatments

      Psychotherapy Somewhat Helpful
I go to a therapist for chronic pain, and we've touched on EDs. I tell him I'm over them though.
      Zoloft Somewhat Helpful
It worked on my depression, but not my ED. Also, my sex drive suffered significantly.
