I am the director of a rehab center for persons with disabilities, i have three great kids, am a single parent (newly) and am looking for support- My eight year has autisum - newly given that news- he also has ADHD - I think we have been treating him wrong for years and now I feel like I have to fight to get him the right treatment--but what is that- i am looking for person that have been through this

Hi Elaine, I also worked with Rehab therapist from peds to neuro to op settings, I also have a Autistic 6 year old son. Suggested reading for you, Temple Grandin, Stephen Shore books, this will give you better insight. Temple's " Thinking in Pictures" Also you want to contact in your area the Center for Autism Related Disabilites, the University that is near by should have that information. Talk with BMC, Behavorial Management Consultants of the = to. You also need to reconsider the ADHD side of this. It does not fly when your child is Autistic, that branding can be very very wrong, I would seek aout opinions from Qualified, CME Credited hours in the Field of Autism, Psychologist. In Tallahassee, Casey Schmidt with Marks and Associates, he has been a key speaker on the topic as well as a very well educated psychologst in the field. Credentials is where this comes to.
I would consider who told you your son has ADHD, what qualifications do they hold? Just some things to ponder and act on. If there is a local support group meeting, I say attend when you can, even if it is an Adult oriented meeting. I was abused as a chaild for a long time by a neighboor , i am just now remembering the things that happened and it is overwhelming , i a having flashback that are unreal- have tryed therpy and medication and feel all alone and need to know someone else has gone threw this and can give me advise as to how to handle it.

I am a single mother of three great kids, one of which has just been diagnosed with autism today. My kids and I have had a very tough couple of years--but I think and hope we are coming out of the fogg My son just turned eight and has been treated for ADHD for the last three years- but i knoew something was going on more Anyway he has autism and adhd. I love him so much and am turning to htis space to get some assistance in getting him the right help.
