Close Diabetes Type 1
I have been a Type I Diabetic for over 40 years. I recently heard of this site and since I never talked with others in the same situation I thought I would see what others thought about living with Type 1.
Treatments
- Diabetic Diet Somewhat Helpful
- For many years I followed the exchange diet with Humulin Regular or Humalog and NPH insulin (and older types - Lente and Semi-Lente). Before glucose testing I was almost always had high glucose but no acidosis. Worrying about the diet at least once caused me to ignore hypoglycemic signs resulting in a blackout.
- Humalog Somewhat Helpful
- Worked well with NPH or in insulin pump. However, wehn off health insurance for a few months due to problems with COBRA found that the price was too high and had to switch back to Humulin which works as well in my insulin pump.
- Insulin (Regular and NPH) Somewhat Helpful
- This was mostly successful. I used a sliding scale, giving myself up to 3 shots a day. I still use Regular but in an insulin pump now. I had several unexpected hypoglycemic incidents on Regular & NPH and when Lantus came along I switched to it to try and get rid of the Regular/NPH peaks which had caused blackouts and several car accidents over the years.
- Insulin Pump Somewhat Helpful
- Have used the pump for many years. I like the benefits of the pump enough to live with the side effects such as scarring from sites, expense, and tendancy for high blood sugar expecially when I forget to compensate for what I am eating or calculate the number of carbs wrong. Since I test frequently, I manage the highs at least to the point that I get good A1C results.
- Lantus Working / Worked
- This worked well for the most part. I still used Humalog insulin with it. I still had one hypoglycermic incident from either the Humalog or having too much Lantus in my system causing me to black out. I would still be on it if I hadn't been convinced to use a pump.
Close Depression
I suffer from depression that at times makes it fifficult to function well.
Treatments
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Somewhat Helpful
- Know enough about it to recognize when my thinking is off, but cannot stick to it.
- Lexapro Not Working
- Tried it for over a year without feeling any different. Doctor thought I needed a stronger dose than insurance would pay for. could not afford to pay for increased dose on my own. No side effects.
- Positive Thinking Somewhat Helpful
- Works when I think about it, but I cannot keep it up for long.
- Psychotherapy Working / Worked
- See a psychologist almost weekly. Has helped to talk about concerns and problems that I am experiencing including depression. I am better able to cope as a result and feel I am coping much better than when I started.
- Support from Friends & Family Somewhat Helpful
- Started tlaking with mother on phone daily. She is the only person I stay in contact with since I was laid off. Talking with her helps since I try and stay positive through the call.
- Wellbutrin Not Working
- Tried generic version for one month but became jittery and had minor tremors in arms. The small dose I was on had no effect on my depression.
