mohs surgery Mood
Wednesday, October 21, 2009 | A Frustrating story
To anyone who has had mohs surgery I would greatly appreciate a reply. I am frustrated because I can not find out any information as to what is the normal procedure for preparing patients who are having mohs surgery. I was totally unprepared and would like to know how others were treated and what instructions were given pre and post op. I had the surgery in san diego, CA and in a doctors office. I was concerned because I had bcc removed ten years ago in PA with a plastic surgeon and it was relatively simple. This became a big deal and much more involved than I had anticipated. The doctor came highly recommended and with excellent credentials however, it was all down hill from there. I was told to have my consult the same day as the procedure. What a mistake. I was never told of any of the restrictions prior to my visit. I was not told about the number of hours etc. I had to reschedule for a week later. Is it normal procedure to stop all pain relieving medications, beer wine and alcohol for a week before and after the surgery? I was told I could not fly for 25 days and to basically be on bed rest for three weeks. No work, dishes, excersize, not to even walk the dog. I was left with a quarter size hole that was to be reconstructed a week later. Again, not prepared. I was given an ativan ten minutes before they began the injections to numb my face. This time I had a terrible reaction to the injections. I thought I was having a stroke or heart attack. I got an throbbing pain dead center of my head and had trouble breathing. They were not prepared for the emergency. I had to tell them to take my blood pressure and to  call an ambulance. The surgeon said it would take too long for it get here and had them call my husband to come and get me to take me to the ER. I was hidden in a back hallway and taken out in a wheelchair  through a back rear exit so none of the other patients would see me. I have a history of allergic reactions to some meds etc and the surgeon was well aware of this as well as a history of high blood pressure. I was admitted to the hospital with what they first thought was a heart attack. I was released two days later after all the testing, stress test etc with an adverse reaction to the injections. It took days for the surgeon to finally call me. I have not gone back and am planning to see the plastic surgeon in PA who did the bcc ten years ago to try and repair my face. I need to know how others were treated and where the surgery took place. I don't know how to file a report or if I should to save someone else from having this happen. I don't know why they can't stitch the wound the same day it is removed. Mine was considered small and caught early. I understand the effectiveness of how the procedure is performed. I am comparing this to a recent abdominal surgery that my husband went through. He was not given half the restrictions I was. He went under general anesthesia and told not to travel for two weeks. I hope someone can help with their experience.
