This week I am finally allowing myself to know how exhausted I am. I feel that it is less a physical tiredness, …
A few months I recieved a notice that my high school class will be celebrating it's 50th high school reunion. Needless to say I thought it was unbelievable.
After thinking back that I graduated North Haven High in 1959, it became more believable. I thought I would love to attend.
Besides attending my high school reunion my daughter and husband live in the area. I would love to them again. I have not seen her since 1999, her wedding.
Since I am in a wheelchair, I need to plan for this.
1] I wrote to the woman who contacted me to inform her that I would be attending and I need things to be accessible. (already done).
2] I need to find a travel agent who is disability savvy.
3] I need to find prices of the different ways of transportation to see the most inexpensive way to travel.
[a] Some one told me of an accessible travel agency online who might help me.
I need to check it out.
[4] I need to find the money for this, since I am on a fixed income.
[5] I need to find a motel or hotel who has accessible room and with a roll in shower. (most have only 1 accessible room with a roll in shower)
[6] I need to find accessible transportation to my airport and transportation to the area I will be staying in; and transportation to the the reunion place.
There are more issues, but I can not think of them at this time. If anyone can think of other issues I did not think of, please let me know.
Thanks Judi

This is a farewell. I have decided to admit that I am not posting here, I like you all so much and may return to …
I hope you can make it and also get to see your family in the process. I wish I could be of help, but can't and don't have any more ideas than what you came up with. Hugs, Sandi

Sounds to me like you have it pretty well covered. Hopefully the place they are having the reunion will be ADA. Do you have someone that travels with you? How far are you going? Do you do stand & pivot transfers or use a slide board? I don't remember you ever telling me how you became to be in a chair. Injury or health issue? I spent several years as a tech for people in chairs. Sold a few and worked for Hoveround wheelchairs for 3 + years. Probably never heard of them though. I was a certified tech for all types of power chairs. Let me know if you have a power chair or manual. I maybe be able to think of some things you may be over looking for your trip.

Thanks, Everyone.
I went to high school in North Haven, CT, which is outside New Haven, CT. I wrote to the group to enquire about accessibility. If they don't have accessiblilty I won't be able to make it.
I have been in a Jazzy powerchair for the last 2 years.
I fell in 1994 on 2 steps of black ice and shattered my right leg. Within 6 months I developed an leg infection which almost cost me my right leg. It took me another year to get rid of the infection. After that, the bottom bone began to come out. They put in 6 pins to fix the bones. The pins were removed 1 year later. Then another year to learn how to walk.
I was fine up to 2 years ago, then I started falling.
I moved to an accessible apartment and I was able to go out whenever I wanted to.
I volunteered at a independent living center and realized I did not have stay house bound. Now, I can go wherever I want to.
Some of the places I have been to: Columbus, OH, Indianapolis, IN, North Haven, CT, Washington, D.C.

I am so sorry to hear about your leg. :( My mom had to have dual knee surgery, and it has been really hard finding a good, accessible house for her. Every place we went to seemed to have tubs, and not a walk-in shower, etc. We still haven't found a place that was move-in ready, but one place was willing to put in a walk-in shower for her. It was so weird because they had handicap parking spots at every building, but nothing on the inside of the buildings could qualify as accessible.
It really helped to open my eyes. What do people do when they get hurt, or need to be in a wheelchair?

I know what you mean. I found it difficult to find affordable, accessible housing. I found accessible housing thru Public Housing (that may be acceptable to all people). Do you have an independent living center in you area? If not, look up on the web for NCIL. Maybe her doctor might help. NCIL means National Indepentent Living
Hugs to you and yours. Judi
Let me know if you can find this wesite site. Why not google accessible housing on the web.

Thanks, Judi! I really couldn't believe that they put all those accessible parking spots in and had nothing accessible inside the buildings...not one building. It seemed so weird that the state would require accessible parking but not accessible living units. I sent a letter to our congressman about it, but never got a response back. I will look into the NCIL. Thank you so much!

AN UPATE TO CONNECTICUT.
1. I e-mail the resturant in Connecticut, they replied that they accessible (1 problwem down). If they were not accessible, I would not attend.
2. I believe I found a travel agent who deals with accessible travel.
I have they phone number but I have not called yet.
One issue that I am concerned about is "how am I get the money with out
damaging my rent.
