Medically Interesting
My wife called my sleep doctor yesterday to ask what the chances were that medication could help enough that I might be able to go back to school. …
I was diagnosed with Narcolepsy this summer after years of problems with my sleep. I am 38 and have been dealing with the sypmtoms since I was 15. In high school I was labelled as an underacheiver, in my early 20's it was considered depression, in my late 20's it was upgraded to ADD, in my early 30's it was ADD and a undetermined sleep disorder. I have been treated with several drugs, which at best helped very little and at worst made me aggressive and hostile. My sleepiness has adversely affected every job I've ever had and I've been either let go for not performing up to expectations or could never seem to advance. Somehow through all of this I got married to wonderful and caring woman. She was a driving force behind me pushing my doctors to really try and figure out what exactly was going on. Four years ago I went in for a PSG and an MSLT because I was complaining that I didn't sleep well. The results after the tests and seeing three professionals, were that I didn't sleep well. I was on Ritalin already, for the ADD, and after my test I had Concerta and Welbutarin added. They helped some but I never felt truly awake at any time. I was still having trouble falling asleep, waking up several times through the night, and had a lot of EDS. I moved three times after the test and couldn't properly follow up on any of it. My current doctor prescibed me Ambien and a small dose of Provigil. It helped but wasn't enough so she sent me to a sleep lab. They diagnosed me with N and upped the Provigil to a more appropriate dose. I had another PSG recently to make sure my N isn't being aggravated by an apnea. I am feeling better on the higher dosage of Provigil and allowing myself to nap. It's not perfect but my wife and kids have noticed a difference and I hope to be able to at least be awake enough to go back to school soon.
