Has anyone had experience taking a medrol dose pack? My doctor is prescribing it for short-term to help decrease the severe pain I am having after my last prolotherapy injection. I was wondering if anyone knew possible effects? I have never taken it before, I read that it negates contraception, so I should probably use condoms if I have sex with my boyfriend this weekend? I was also wondering if it has any other effects? Will it make me drowsy? Will it effect my diet? Can I drive while taking it? I would appreciate it if anyone could share their experience, thanks!
I have been in so much pain the past few weeks. 2-3 SI subluxations per day, switching sides from right to left. I'm in school, I can't be taking as much medication as I am. I was doing so well, only taking my strong pain medication at night to help me sleep. Now I'm taking it about 3-4x per day. I'm so frustrated, just when I think I see the light at the end of the tunnel, it dims out!

Yes, medrol dose pack is a steroid. It does not have mental effects like drowsiness or effects on appetite, driving, etc. Side effects include osteoporosis, thinning of skin, weight gain (all with prolonged use.) Yes, use a condom.

Hey there! That REALLY sucks about your SI joints. When was your last prolotherapy treatment? Did you try the prp?
I have recieved the medrol dose pack before - over a year ago - for what my doctor believed was nerve-related pain (turns out it was SI joint dysfunction and associated referred pain). During the first day most of my pain was relieved, and this continued through the 4th day. I'm very sorry to tell you this, but after the dose pack was gone is when all hell broke loose. My pain came back and was probably 50% worse. The instability had progressed too. Also, my hormones were really messed up. It took several months for my menstrual cycle to return to normal, and this only happened because I used a bio-identical progesterone creme for a month. I wish I could give you better news about the steroid pack. Also, as I'm sure you know, the medrol dose pack will negate most if not all of the effects of your most recent prolotherapy treatment if you recieved it less than 6 weeks ago. This is because steroids or any anti-inflammatory meds inhibit ALL aspects of the 6 week inflammatory/reconstruction process.
Let me know if I can help you with anything else!
With lots of caring,

I totally agree with orchid medrol dose pack or any steriods made me worse in the long run. I can no longer take any steriods or anti inflammatories. I wound up with Viral Meningitis as a result of using steriods. I found out it is a herpes type virus Meningitis I never knew I had any herpes virus I had viral meningitis in 1988 and it lays dormant in my spine and will come back again.
I applaud you for doing prolotheraphy it's a very painful treatment. and insurance won't pay for it which sucks. I hope you feel better soon.

oye nice to know... i'm on day 3 of the pack. my doctor said he commonly prescribes the medrol does pack for patients after the prolotherapy injections when their bodies can reduce the inflammatory response. I felt like my pain was more of the mechanical instability, but I have been in so much pain lately I was thinking anything might help. I followed the recommendation with the medrol pack, but if I don't feel better at the end of 7 days I will be calling the doctor to ask to come in. I can't live on pain medication all the time, and function well in school. I also had a loss of bladder control last night after my night dose (2 x 4mg pills). Any ideas??? I'm going to let the doctor know about it, we'll see how tonight goes.
