    • About Me

I'm 25 years old, married for going on 3 years. I have an amazing 19-month old son who brightens every moment of my day. I was a certified pharmacy technician for several years, until I was forced to quit work due to chronic pain.

    • Interests

My son is absolutely my main interest, he's a little comedian, and even at my worst moments of pain he brings a smile to my face! I enjoy reading, I'm trying to learn how to knit, and I love animals - if I had the money, I'd love to have a huge farm and adopt every stray animal there is! I was a horseback rider for 12 years, but I haven't been able to ride for several years due to the pain, and my current doctor advises against it. I miss it every day and definitely hope to get back in the saddle one day!

Welcome to DS and the SM group. I am so sorry that you have gone through this alone for so long but then agian I know what that is like too. Before I was finally diagnosed in 05 I had been going back and forth to my GP for years with no results. He would run a test and if it came back negative then he would just drop the subject until the next time I complained.Ironacly his Daughter that was in his practice took my case and went the one step farther by having a series of MRI`s done both with and without contrast. And there it was three syrnx in my spinal cord.. Would have liked to been there when the Dad doc found out it wasn`t all IN MY HEAD after all.

    • Close Syringomyelia

In late 2004 I started having severe back and leg pain, not following any sort of trauma. Eventually a thoracic MRI showed an arachnoid cyst along with 2 syrinxes(?). Though my MRI reports state the diagnosis of syringomyelia, I can't seem to find a doctor who will help me or answer my questions, which leaves me pretty confused and frustrated, as well as worried about my future. I'd love to have more children, but I have to admit I'm scared, since my condition seems to be steadily worsening.

      Treatments

      Oxycodone Somewhat Helpful
Unfortunately pain medication is the only thing that gets me through the days right now but I hate depending on medication it isnt something I want to use for longterm and Ive now been on the same dosage for the past 4 years and it doesnt help anywhere near as much now as it used to which still was never very much but Im always grateful for any relief!
      Physical Therapy Not Working
I went to physical therapy immediately after my surgery and it helped at that point since the goal then was for me to work on walking again and being able to do simple stretches. Ive tried it several times since as much as insurance will allow but I have to admit it doesnt really help and I usually end up in more pain!
    • Close Chronic Pain

I've been dealing with chronic pain for the past 4 years. I have been diagnosed with syringomyelia, and I suppose the 2 are related, though I'm struggling to learn more. I'm 25 years old and definitely get tired of hearing its impossible for me to experience chronic pain at my age, I would love not to hurt nearly every second of every day! I definitely feel as if my pain is worsening, and I'm scared about my future.

      Treatments

      Heat Somewhat Helpful
It gives me small, small relief for a couple of minutes, but that's something.
      Hydrocodone Not Working
About as helpful as Tylenol, unfortunately.
      Lidoderm Not Working
      Did not help at all.
      Lyrica Somewhat Helpful
I feel it helps a little, it works better than Neruontin for me.
      Methadone Somewhat Helpful
Helped a small amount, but I ended up on 80mg/day and experienced too many stomach problems as side effects.
      Morphine Not Working
      Neurontin Not Working
      Oxycodone Somewhat Helpful
Currently on OxyContin and Roxicodone, the side effects are less than with the Methadone and the medication helps me get through the days. I don't enjoy the thought of being on medications for years to come, especially ones with such bad reps. as these, but like I said, for now they help, and that's what's important!
      Physical Therapy Not Working
Insurance won't pay for me go through any more therapy, and I can't afford it on my own. I try to continue with the exercises and stretches, but sometime s I feel its hurting more than helping.
      TENS Considering
My doctor suggested this, but I feel I don't know enough about it to go ahead with it yet.
