I am 31 years old and live outside of Buffalo, NY. I was born with a cleft lip and palate (the oldest of 3 children...and the only child to have a cleft). I hold 2 masters degrees and I am employeed as a Mechanical Engineer at General Motors. I am married (just celebrated my 3rd anniversary) and now I am at a point in my life where I am thinking about starting a family.

Close Cleft Lip / Palate
My husband is really wanting to start a family (as do I), but I am scared to pass my birth defect on to my child. I am looking for a genetic counsoler in my area to discuss my concerns. It has been interesting to read all of your posts and to find other women who have a cleft lip / palate but their children do not.
Treatments
- Reconstructive Surgery Working / Worked
- I had 13 plastic surgries to correct my birth defect. Overall, they were very successful. I was lucky in the fact that I did not have many problems with speech or hearing. I did need braces on my teeth at two differnt times in my life. (First, as a preteen 11 - 18 years old, then a second time as an adult 23 - 28 years old).
