Close Chronic Pain
I have chronic migraine and fibromyalgia. Have had migraine whole life, but has been chronic since 2006. I get 3 manageable weeks out of every 5; 2 out of 5 are really bad. In the ER every other month for pain shots, usually.
Treatments
- Heat Working / Worked
- Makes me feel better, but doesn't eliminate pain. Just reduces it. No side effects.
- Hydrocodone Somewhat Helpful
- My "last ditch" effort - 50% of time it works, the rest of the time, it causes nasty rebound headaches. I only use it if I'm contemplating hospital anyway.
- Naproxen Working / Worked
- I use this daily (some days I use Relafen instead, but most days it's Naproxen) and it's reasonably effective. Works 3 weeks out of 5, for the most part.
- Physical Therapy Somewhat Helpful
- I go to deep tissue massage twice a week, see ordinary physical therapist a few times a month. Massage helps a LOT (I feel worse if I don't go), physical therapist I'm not sure yet.
- Topamax Somewhat Helpful
- Well, I feel much, much worse when I run out, so it does something. It does not get rid of the pain by any stretch of the imagination, though.
- Acupuncture Somewhat Helpful
- I thought it helped (better for fibromyalgia than migraines), my doctor thought it didn't help enough for her to authorize additional treatments. Go figure.
- Physical Exercise Working / Worked
- I try to exercise at least 20 minutes a day - usually walking or Wii Fit, but anything works. This seems to make a HUGE difference - if I don't do it, the migraines get much worse. If I do it, they reduce in severity and frequency.
Close Migraine Headaches
I have chronic migraine. I take daily painkillers - migraines every day. 3 weeks out of 5, they work; 2 out of 5, I spend most of the day on the sofa because nothing really works.
Treatments
- Acupuncture Working / Worked
- I thought it worked, but my doctors didn't. Go figure.
- Avoid Certain Foods / Chemicals Working / Worked
- Yeah, that is REALLY important. For me, it's alcohol (esp. wine), nuts, nitrites, artificial sweeteners, and aged cheeses. I also have to avoid ALL scented things, which is tough.
- Axert Not Working
- Caused rebounds for me.
- Botulin Toxin Not Working
- Worked the first time, not the second. Go figure.
- Caffeine Not Working
- For me, one sip of cola has the effect of about 10 cups of espresso (if I don't just vomit first). Caffeine= not good. Bizarrely, dark chocolate seems to help, though. Guess that has just about the right amount. Only works if my head ALREADY hurts, though - if not,, it gives me a headache.
- Fioricet Not Working
- Took that about...15 or 16 years ago. Didn't work.
- Imitrex Not Working
- They tried it about 13 years ago- I used to give myself the injections. Couldn't breathe. So I don't do that anymore.
- Inderal Not Working
- It worked for a few years, then stopped. I hear that happens. It was more than 10 years ago, though.
- Maxalt Not Working
- Gives me rebound headaches.
- Midrin Not Working
- Took that one...somewhere between 15 and 17 years ago. Didn't work.
- Naproxen Working / Worked
- Works pretty well 3 weeks out of every 5. I take it daily, round the clock, at this point.
- Relpax Working / Worked
- Works most of the time.
- Topamax Somewhat Helpful
- I feel much, much worse when I run out, so I assume it does something, but it certainly doesn't work on its own.
- Zomig Working / Worked
- Works most of the time. Tastes like SHIT. Can't they make this stuff in a pill you swallow?
- Physical Exercise Working / Worked
- I exercise at least 20 minutes a day. When I dont the migraines get much worse. Doing it seems to reduce frequencyseverity.
