I am very surprised, too, because I was on a high fiber, no gluten or refined things, etc diet and it appeared suddenly, an acute attack that went away quickly with antibiotics.. The colonoscopy said I had 'many' diverticula, the little traps in the colon. How? Why? I would second having the antibiotics available if possible and a reliable thermometer for your vacation. I hope you still go on it and have a wonderful time. It sounds like some of the best medicine you can 'take' right now! Bon voyage. It if is a regular cruise ship they may have a medic or doctor on board who can be alerted about your health concerns. Above all, do not worry. My husband has had Type 1 diabetes for over 40 years and worked in a hospital and studies a lot about current medical theory and there is a lot to be said about stress reduction and the possible autoimmune reactions someone else mentioned. Diet is essentially important but sometimes it just takes time and trial and error to learn what you can and cannot eat, and for what reasons. I find it very exciting after 56 years in this body to really start learning what I have and what is going on and the many simple ways I can make my health better. This is a wonderful time to be living, to have so much new information available to enhance our quality of life.

Hope you feel better. I had an attack out of the blue also. affter clear liquids go on low fiber diet until no pain then increase fiber slowly. Watch for fever. most people-not me-have only 1 attack. talk to doc about taking antibiiotics with you on trip in case you are not better. Know where ER is on trip also. good luck
