      From MalenaS September 7

Hi and welcome! I can empathize with you. I suffer from back pain (especially severe cervical spine pain) and a list of other illnesses. You are not alone. I find this site great for sharing with others and learning about treatments and coping strategies. There are a lot of good recommendations from fellow pain sufferers. I hope you feel better and take good care of yourself. If you'd like to chat, I'm available. Feel better!

    • Close Depression
      Type: Clinical (Major) Depression

I have had depression since an operation, 6 years ago.

      Treatments

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Too Soon to Tell
I tried some of this a couple of years ago, and I couldn't change my thinking the way they wanted, but I thought I'd give it another go.
      Cymbalta Somewhat Helpful
Still have terribly bad days, but no where near as bad without the medication. No bad side effects, except perhaps more prone to bruising on my legs.
      Effexor Not Working
Terrible side effects of insomnia, so bad that I only used it two days before it was stopped.
      Elavil Not Working
Doctors thought that because of the Muscle relaxant values in this, that it would help me, but Unfortunately it didn't help at all. This is the first I tried.
      Lexapro Working / Worked
Was the best thing that I have taken so far, but when they took me off it, as the doctors thought they'd try something that helps with pain as well, I felt as though It was a mask, and who I was on the medication was SO different to what I was without it. In the beginning, felt nauseous after taking for a little while, but if taken after food, this was ok.
Support from Friends & Family Somewhat Helpful
My Family are rather supportive, and it helps a lot when they come to appointments with me. My Boyfriend is really supportive, but doesn't know what to do when I am really down. I recently had a falling out with my best friend, which is awful as I think having a best friend , as well, really helps with the downs.
      Writing Somewhat Helpful
Gives me something to bounce my thoughts off, and good to look back, when I'm in a different mood to see how I might have handled things differently. Some days I can't remember times where I felt ok, writing helps to remember those days.
    • Close Back Pain

When I was 15 years old (6 years now), I had a Spinal fusion, to correct scoliosis, and they said the pain would go away. Now they say they can see no cause, and are trying to get me off my pain medication because its causing rebound pain.

      Treatments

      Heat Somewhat Helpful
Helps a bit when it gets bad, but then getting up to get the hot water bottle, and everything is too bothersome and I don't usually bother, but keeping my back wrapped up is good, mainly to prevent chills, which hurt so much!
      Ibuprofen Not Working
tried this for about a month, i think until i ended up in hospital from stomach problems. The doctor told me to stop the Ibuprofen, and my stomache pain went away, so i avoid it now
      Physical Therapy Working / Worked
My Physio, is really great... she's given me exercises to do every night, which without seems my pain increases, the next day.
      Relaxation Not Working
Nothing gets done, and staying in bed for a long time really makes my back ache.
      TENS Not Working
Tried this a couple of times... It tickled the first time, then it hurt twice as bad after wards, when I'd take it off, so I didn't like using it.
    • Open Anxiety

When I was 17, I was diagnosed with Severe anxiety and moderate depression.

      Treatments

      Lexapro Working / Worked
I didn't know that this was for anxiety, but I was taking it for my depression, and come to think of it, my anxiety has been much worse without it.
      Meditation Somewhat Helpful
I am so terrible with meditation, and visualisations, but distraction seems to be the thing that helps a lot, but that means I rely on others heaps.
Positive Thinking Too Soon to Tell
I'm working on this method. Challenging my thoughts like: "I can't do this", then find evidence that I CAN do this, because I've done it before, and that I made it out of the house.
    • Open Fibromyalgia

Not long ago, when my doctors were testing for underlying problems for my increased back pain, they discovered that I had bad Fibromyalic Tenderness.

      Treatments

      Cymbalta Not Working
Went on this for my anxiety, depression and pain. While it helped the depression minorly, it gave no other help.
      Effexor Not Working
Had massive side-effects including not being able to sleep, so I stopped as soon as I could
      TENS Not Working
Tried this a couple of times for my back pain, and discovered that the pain afterwards was so much that the minor relief from the pain was not worth it at all.
    • Open Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

      Treatments

      Cymbalta Not Working
      No help for this.
      Lexapro Somewhat Helpful
Helped my mood, which makes it easier to get up, and moving, but not a lot of help.
Pain Management Clinic Working / Worked
I've been visiting the Pain Unit for 6 years now, and they are great, senting me all over the hospital to make sure everything possible is done for me. Only problem is I have to travel and hour by bus to get there. One bad thing is that my Pain Doctor wants me to come off the only medication that works with no substitute.
