I visited my pulmonary doctor yesterday and he emphysized the fact that I needed to use oxygen -I had lung volume reduction surgery in 2001 so you would think I'd have no problem with oxygen - wrong - I have no problem with using it at home but I'm really uncomfortable (vain I guess) using it outdoors - can anyone out there using oxygen help me feel more comfortable about it.
any advise is dreatly appreciated
thanks

I am a bit self conscious in front of people but most times folks look because they are interested, curious but not unfriendly. I think it gets easier as our need increases and just forcing yourself to 'go public' repeatedly. I usually just smile at folks and they smile back because they are more comfy in my presence. Hope you can build up more confidence so you can get the most out of your vacation.

I think it is normal to be a bit self conscious about this, however think of what it does to you if you don't wear it. This saves you from creating heart issues, kidney issues etc... and Lord knows we have enough with the COPD. I had a problem in the beginning, then I just figured I could be seen like this or stay home and rot, or go out and ruin my other organs and soon end up in a wheel chair with oxygen so I took the easy way out and used oxygen, I'm chicken. If you think someone is staring at you smile, wave, nod your head whatever, but I do think you will find people, if they are/or do look, it is they are mor curious than anything.
I would love to hear about your Lung Volume Reduction Surgery, as I also had it done and like to hear from others to see how they get along then and now.
Have a fantanstic day.

I have found that .... when someone is starring at me, I stare right back at them, sizing them up and down, until they are more uncomfortable than I. I guarantee, they think twice the next time! Then I smile and go on my way.....
