About Me
I am married, 51, with two daughters, 20 and 25, living in Broomal, PA, a western suburb of Philly. I am a computer network infrastructure ngineer, fortes including Active Directory and Exchange email systems, as well as a Microsoft Certified Trainer, by trade. I developed a DVT from being in a hip brace after a Proximal Hamstring Avulsion surgical repair on my left leg, during recovery while being completely immobile for 5 weeks. The surgery was performed on 3/10/09. The brace was at 0 degrees flex for the first four weeks, then bumped up to 40 degress flex at week 5. I was given a Ted sock, but with the brace, there was no way to pull it all the way up. After getting the brace off and begining some PT on the leg, I noticed my calf and ankle swelling up. I was doing a slow 1 mile walk by this time. I thought I was doing good getting towards my goal of running my pre-injury 1.5 morning run eventually. I called about the swelling to ask the doc, but I always had to go through his surgical asistant. She just kind of said to just reduce my activity. This went on for three weeks going down to a half a mile, then to not walking, with the same response. I asked her if I should get back in bed all day? No answer to that question. I kind of feel now she was blowing me off all that time. It's tough to be one's own advocate if no one listens. I finally started actual PT visits at a rehab. The PT was surprised at the size of the leg. She took measurements of both and faxed them to my surgeon. The next day, on 5/13/09 (yes, that long post-op), my surgeon actually called. He told me I needed an ultrasound to see if I have a DVT. Next day I got the ultrasound and was told to immediately go to the nearest ER. Oh joy, I thought. That bad?? The admitted me immediately, read the ultrasound images, and put me on Heperon right away, as well as a 5mg Coumadin. They asked me if I was in pain. I said with the size of that leg? What do you think? They gave me a shot of Dilaudid. Finally the leg felt normal after that. I was discharged the next evening with a perscription for 5mg Coumadin and 100mg Lovenox. Oh joy. Inject myself?? I was finally taken off the Lovenox after four weeks, but my INR is still fluctuating. The Coumadin does has been upped little by little. Currently, I am at 10mg on M-W-Th-Fr, and 5 mgs the remaining days. I don't have much faith in docs now with post surgery repair preventative procedures. If I had known about all of this, I would have asked for something, anything, to prevent this from occuring. I actually stopped drinking and taking vitamins, including 1000mg vitamin E. I should have kept drinking 3-4 days a week, and kept taking the vitamin E, and this probably would't have happened. Oh well, live and learn?

Close Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
I had a Hamstring Avulsion Repair that resulted in a DVT
Treatments
- Coumadin Too Soon to Tell
- Scared
- Heparin Too Soon to Tell
- I received a Heparin drip while in the hospital when first told to rush to the nearest ER after an Ultrasound determined I have a DVT. Released a day later with a perscription for Coumadin and Lovenox.
- Lovenox Too Soon to Tell
- Scarier. Four weeks now and my INR levels are still not where they need to be.
Close Pulmonary Embolism
I was diagnosed with a DVT while recovering from a proximal hamstring tendon avulsion repair (I tore two of the hamstring muscles at the pelvic side, and got them reattached). It wasn't for three weeks before my complaints concerning the swelling in my ankles and calves were heard by the surgeon, then rushed to get an ultrasound, then rushed to the hospital. It was shocking, to say the least. It could have turned into a PR, I was told. I am not a happy camper!
Treatments
- Heparin Working / Worked
- I was put on a Heparin drip while I was in the hospital for an overnight stay.
- Lovenox Working / Worked
- Taking Lovenox while waiting for my INR to stabilize. It worked, from what I was told by the doc.
- Coumadin Working / Worked
- I am currently on Coumadin for the past 5 weeks since 514 when the ultrasound revealed a DVT.
