First day of med's Mood
Saturday, June 13, 2009 | A Sad story

Today was the first day for the med's and I think it was more negative than positive, and I have been feeling awlful about it, the fact that to find the right medication you have to give your child drug after drug to see what's right, It can't be good for them, and for me as  his mum i am soooo frustrated.

The specialist has said to only give my son half a tablet to start with for one week then increase it to a whole tablet for the second week, my son only weighs 30kg, to be taken in the morning.

Today started with a stomach ache, then headache, dizziness, wobbly on his feet, not feeling all there, loss of appeitete , irritable, anxious, anger, tiredness, temperature, anoyed fast.

I don't feel good about this.

The tablet wore off around mid afternoon, so I am wondering if this is going to last the school day, let alone even sending him to school on the medication when he is like that, it won't be a good day I already know that, and I am trying to improve his day's.

I am feeling very frustrated at the moment, and all I can think is why can't he just have the right med's to start with, if it was that easy huh!

I am just venting

Will tomorrow be any better?, how long do I give it to say NOPE these are no good  and ring the doctor and get something else?

I was hoping for not such a stressful weekend with this all, but I am stressed.

Remember to take a deep breath, also make sure he has a good breakfast before he has the tablet, this helps with the absorption of the tablet. Make sure you write down everything that is not normal behaviour. This is the sort of information that your specialist needs to know when you go back to see them. The loss of appetite is common, and I noticed allot of the other symptoms when my daughter was also on this medication. Hence the reason we changed to Concerta.

Every child is different and will react differently to the medication. What may suit one child may not suit another child with the exact same problem.

I wont say it is going to be easy because it wont be, we have been dealing with this for the last 7 years since my daughters diagnosis and it still in not easy. Some days are good and some are bad. I, myself am still learning everyday on ways to deal with her behaviour.

The half dose that your son is on will wear off around lunch time, as it did with my daughter, once you work up to the full tablet it should last around 8 hours which would see him through the school day.

Like most of us it is good to have somewhere you can come and vent away what is on your mind, so vent as much as you want.

Let us know how things progress, if you have any worries at all you can ring the specialist and talk to them about it. This is what they are there for. You could even ask them for their email so you are able to send them questions as they arise.

Good luck and I am here if you have any questions.

I just went back and looked at your prior response - sorry, still getting used to how this whole journal thing works! Anyway, I agree that it was very smart to wait until the weekend to start the medication. Toni seems to be dead-on with everything. I've been told that it can take a week or two for some of the initial side effects to shake out. I certainly woudn't wait it out if there was something particularly alarming though. We were lucky as we didn't have any real immediate side effects except loss of appetite, which seems to go with the territory to some extent or another with all these meds, and some trouble sleeping.

Do the teachers know your son is starting medication? I've always alerted my son's teachers any time we've made a change. That way they can report back and let me know if they're seeing any change (hopefully improvement).

Yes the teacher knows that he is just starting medication and knows I need to know in detail how he is at school good and bad.
Unfortunately she is not the best teacher to talk to , which has made things hard from the start of the year, It is like she judged my son and his behaviours from the very start, without listening and being supportive .
Now he has his diagnosis she has in fact changed her attitude though, because he has a label , That peeves me off alot to be honest.
I just hope she does the right thing now and is honest with what she has to say because it is so damn important in getting the med's right.
