Today I took my daughter ( With ADD) to her swim team practice . The children all got in the water to start practice and then their head coach called them out of the pool to "talk about breast stroke". This is a complete change in routine. The children usually swim a warm up before anything else. All of the children got out of the water except for my daughter. She started to swim her warm up.
Not to long ago this would have bothered me. My only thoughts would have been to make her stop, make her get out, make her listen, "is it that hard to pay attention?" " Why can't she be attentive like everyone else?" " Why is she always the one that is different?".
but instead, yesterday I appreciated the beauty of her swim. I noticed that her stroke had improved and that she was very graceful in the water. When she noticed her mistake a few Laps later, she got out of the water, smiled , said "oops" and joined the rest of the team.
Her coach, who has always been paitent and supportive smiled back and continued to talk.
It was at that moment that I realized just how proud of my daughter I am and how we have both learned to accept her ADD and deal positively with her "little mistakes" .
