Luna is feeling better since she was started her on the Piroxicam on Monday. It's a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory that also has cancer fighting properties. We are hopeful that this medicine will help her to remain comfortable and enjoying life for as long as possible. Her vets have said that some dogs do really well on Piroxicam... am hoping my sweet girl is one of them.
Have been giving her all her favorite treats and splurged on some high-end canned food which she is loving. So glad her appetite is back. We've also been doing frequent slow short walks around the neighborhood. She loves to smell everything... trees, plants, grass, you name it... being outside makes her happy and I feel good indulging her in her favorite pastime.
The overall prognosis unfortunately is not very good... probably 1-3 months though hopefully the Piroxicam will extend that. I plan to keep her as happy and comfortable as I can and will be in regular contact with her vets so we can adjust her meds as needed. Also have been running the AC night and day as it helps her breathe easier. Just need to keep a sweatshirt & blanket handy so I don't freeze... and will worry about the high electric bills later.
Thanks again everyone for your kind words. It really means alot. This is such a hard thing to face and knowing that others understand really helps.
Thanks so much everyone. Your kind thoughts and prayers mean alot. Unfortunately the news I have to share is not good. The tests confirmed that Luna does have lung cancer. As she is 12 and the cancer is fairly advanced she will just be receiving palliative care. I am devastated but plan to make the most of the time we have left together.
Will write more about how Luna is doing tomorrow.
Thanks again...
Susan
Hey guys...
My heart is breaking. My dear dog Luna is very sick. The doctors believe she has lung cancer or possibly a fungal infection they won't know for sure until they do more testing tomorrow (or on Tuesday if she doesn't deteriorate overnight). She is struggling to breathe and coughs quite alot and can't make it up the steps anymore I need to carry her. She is currently on two antibiotics... other than that they told me just to monitor her for signs of stressful breathing and to be sure she takes it very easy. Have been spoiling her by feeding her chicken and cheese by hand... which she loves and just staying close to her. This is so incredibly hard. She has been with me for 12 years now and truly is my best friend.
A favorite pic of my sweet girl...
So if you have a moment please say a prayer for or send a good thought to my dear girl. It would mean alot to me.
Thank you!
Hugs...
Susan
