Elizabeth,
Thank you for the nice message and thanks for adding/wanting me as a friend.
I am glad you are educating yourself on OCD. I am always surprised by people, no matter what the illness, who do not bother to educate themselves and follow doctors and others blindly. I have a need to know as much as possible to know what is going on and to make sure I am getting the best medical care available.
I suffered from age 15 until 32 without a name for what ailed me. I had already been to four shrinks by then. I diagnosed myself in a book store in early 1991 with an OCD specialists book. I have read soooo much since then, been to so many OCD shrinks, support groups and watched as many news shows and documentaries on OCD as possible. Plus, I think I am older than most OCDers on DS and so I have had more time to learn. I guess I should know alot about OCD. If I feel I know more than a shrink I am going to, I am done with them.
I agree with you about the meds. I used believe more in the power of meds to help us but, with experience and time, I now think BT/CBT can be a more powerful tool to treat OCD. I know there must be people who are afraid of BT or do not have access to a therapist, so they are probaly hoping that meds alone will work for them. But, I have experienced what BT/CBT can do for me and have seen what it has done for so many others.
Take care and good luck with feeling better.
Tom
After years of worsening anxiety, I realized the cause of my uncontrollable thoughts. A friend of mine passed away, a mysterious sort. The more I thought about him, the more I realized he had an advanced case of OCD. I thought about my own issues not even realizing the rituals I go through everyday. Most of them are mental but, I had quite a few checking rituals that I didn't notice. I just finished reading Freedom From O.C.D. by Jonathan Grayson and am working on a recovery program.
looking for like minded folks
