    • About Me

I'm a 31yr old female in the UK working as a research scientist and trying to come to terms with not being the active person I was a year and a half ago. I have various symptoms, but as yet no obvious diagnosis - I'm hoping it's just 'one of those things' and will sort itself out in time, but meanwhile I have to remind myself to make the most of what I CAN do In Jan 08 I started getting severe acid reflux, with stomach problems (bloating, loss of appetite) and then developed dysphagia (swallowing problems) after a couple of weeks. My stomach has settled down now and the reflux seems to be better, but the swallowing is still a problem (I have problems with solid/lumpy food, so am pretty much on a liquid/puree diet) though it has gradually got a bit better. I've had lots of tests (endoscopy, barium swallow, monometry, 24 hr acid test, manometry, blood tests) and all were negative apart from some esophagitis. I'm sure I am getting some reflux still though (I'm on PPI's). Last December I started getting on and off pain and tingling in arms and legs, as well as often cold hands and feet. I've had physio and they believe it is due to 'neural tension' - ie tense muscles compressing the nerves. Some gentle 'nerve stretching' exercises have eased some of the symptoms, but I've now got an appointment with a rheumatologist. Oh, and I've also got Hashimoto's thyroiditis which was diagnosed a few years ago.

A reminder that clouds can have silver linings! I heard this on the radio one morning, and really liked the last two lines. After some googling …

    • Close Sjogren's Syndrome

Have had various symptoms for over a year - acid reflux, problems swallowing, dry eyes, sinus/inner ear problems, muscle stiffness and nerve pain now. Possibly Sjogrens?... No diagnosis as yet

    • Close Hypothyroidism

      Diagnosed with Hashimoto's in 2007

      Treatments

      Synthroid Working / Worked
    • Open GERD & Heartburn

Acid reflux started suddenly. Has improved but am still getting reflux. Also have dysphagia (swallowing problems) probably due to reflux.

      Treatments

      Antacids Somewhat Helpful
Gaviscon has a layer which is supposed to suppress reflux - helps sometimes, but also tends to trap any wind as well.
Avoid Certain Foods / Chemicals Working / Worked
Avoid acidic foods, very spicy foods.
      Domperidone Somewhat Helpful
Helps with constipation. Makes no noticeable difference to swallowing
      Ginger Working / Worked
      Definitely settles my stomach
      Prilosec Working / Worked
Helps with acid a lot. Also had other PPI's but not sure there was much difference.
Raising Bed Position Working / Worked
Definitely helps (otherwise swallowing worsens). Have had problems raising bed high enough and wedge pillow may be causing some back problems.
      Reglan Somewhat Helpful
Helped with constipation, but made me very tired - moved to domperidone
