    • About Me

After almost 21 years of living with ulcerative colitis since I was 4 years old, trying numerous diets, herbal remedies, natural healing methods, and every medication in the book including trials, surgery is going to be my saving grace. I feel blessed that this is a solid and straightforward decision for me and I can not wait to have my life NOT revolve around bathrooms, pills, shots, and weird diets and waiting for that next cramp to double me over. I suppose my biggest struggle is that since I was a kid, this is the very thing that we (my parents, doctors and I) have tried so hard to avoid, so changing my attitude towards it has been a bit challenging, but I do believe that this is going to be a blessing. I am entirely at peace with my decision and enjoying the realization of what is important in life, the fact that this disease cannot take that away from me, and that I'm going to get my life back. The morning after my surgery I want a hazelnut coffee with vanilla cream and sugar. And I can't wait to eat a salad with some oily, fattening ranch dressing. Amen!

Had colitis since I was 4- almost 21 years now. I have no more options and am having severe side effects from prednisone and as a result I will be having surgery on october 7th to remove my entire colon. I'm strangely looking very forward to it and it can't get here fast enough as far as I'm concerned.

      Treatments

      Asacol Not Working
lots of pills and no effect
Avoid Certain Foods / Chemicals Working / Worked
avoid spices, fried foods, onions, garlic, veggies, meat, non-organic dairy, tomatoes, anything acidic and anything that tastes good. :)
      Azathioprine Working / Worked
been on it for 11 years, been in remission for 9 of those and been only on Imuran for 5 of those years. stopped working but never had any really bad side effects from it.
      Azulfidine Not Working
didn't work after a few years.
      Colazal Not Working
      didn't work at all.
      Humira Somewhat Helpful
I think the Humira may have helped a little bit, but living with the side effects was awful. I had to get my hair chopped off because I was losing so much of it, I spent the entire evening after giving myself the shot puking in my toilet and that continued randomly for the next week until I got to do it again, felt out of it, gave me the chills and was just awful. Had to plan to do it on a Friday night so that I had the weekend to recover and I could get to work by Monday.
      Lialda Not Working
instead of HELPING my colitis, it gave me side effects that mimicked it. !?!?! also had headaches and joint pain which stopped almost immediately after I stopped taking this. also stopped Rowasa.
      Pets Working / Worked
definitely the least amount of side effects!!
      Prednisone Working / Worked
thanks to this drug i'm osteo-penic. (pre-osteoporosis). not to mention all the side effects.
      Probiotics Working / Worked
Align seemed to help somewhat. I've tried acidolphilus, bifidus, etc. as well. Align showed the most noticable difference.
      Remicade Not Working
I actually had to go to a neurologist to get checked out for MS after taking Remicade. I had anaphylactic shock on my second infusion. I was completely out of it, had severe memory loss, hair loss, couldn't get out of bed, had severe headaches and pain. Even if it worked it wouldn't be worth it to live like I had to on this drug.
Support from Friends & Family Working / Worked
      wouldn't be here without it.
