    • Close Crohn's Disease & Ulcerative Colitis

I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease last January. I've been hospitalized twice, and had 2-3 serious flares. I'm just starting Humira and hopeful this will provide some help.

      Treatments

      Asacol Working / Worked
Decreased nausea, less cramping, less frequent need to defecate, better formed stools. Can't attribute any specific side effect to this medication. Doesn't prevent flares for me.
Avoid Certain Foods / Chemicals Working / Worked
Avoid large amounts of alcohol and spicy foods. Avoid processed foods that can have gluten. Avoid all gluten products. I have decreased symptoms and a better appetite.
      Dietary Modification Working / Worked
Gluten-free allows me to eat more and have less nausea/GI distress.
      Entocort Somewhat Helpful
This medication worked (or at least seemed to) work very well for three-four months after my first flare. I had another more serious flare and moved up to Prednisone.
      Flagyl Not Working
Made me nuts and didn't help heal fissure.
      Prednisone Somewhat Helpful
Worked fantastically until it caused psychosis, increased anxiety and mood swings; I could deal with the moon face and extra 20 lbs. I've been on a long slow taper to get off of this garbage. I would warn against using this medication if you have ANY history of psychological problems. I NEVER WOULD HAVE TAKEN THIS IF I KNEW THE RISK OF SEVERE PSYCHOLOGICAL SIDE-EFFECTS!!!
      Probiotics Working / Worked
I feel better when I have a serving of Kiefer cultured smoothie once a day.
      Purinethol Somewhat Helpful
Hard to tell if it worked other than I was able to reduce my Prednisone a bit and still have some relief. I've discontinued this med, pretty sure it was contributing to receding gums & dry mouth.
      Humira Too Soon to Tell
Just began today with the starter kit. Each shot was sucessively more painful and left four spots on my legs that feel like a bruises. My legs feel like I just went running and my arms feel a bit weak. Have a headache and feel a bit warm in the face. Im hopeful this will subside in a few days. These side effects are already more tolerable than Prednisone! I will gladly take on these for remission or more predictable Crohns relief!
      Lyrica Working / Worked
Helped control Prednisone-induced psychosis the first 2 months on 300 mg of Lyrica. Couldn't stay awake for the first week though :-) It began to increase anxiety shortly after dosing a starting a couple of months ago. I'm tapering off this med over the next month as it is no longer needed. Works great for pain control as well!
    • Close Interstitial Cystitis (IC)

I've had IC since I was 18. It was a big hassle at first but now it's the least of my concerns.

      Treatments

      Bladder Instillation Working / Worked
Works well to control symptoms. Have been receiving treatments for many years and it still works well. Procedure is still very unpleasant, but over quick. It often feels like I have a UTI for 20 min after I urinate out the medicine. I have gotten 5-6 UTI's that I would associate with a treatment in 10 years of monthly instillation. Some family/friends have noticed I have a mild garlic odor the day of or after the treatment :-)
    • Open Anxiety

I have had bouts with serious anxiety since age 15. Been on virtually every med at some point & have tried many alternative treatments. Therapy has proven to be the most effective and longest lasting medicine I have received.

      Treatments

      Breathing Exercises Working / Worked
Helps limit the extent of some attacks/attack symptoms.
      Breathwork Working / Worked
Helps limit the extent of some attacks/attack symptoms.
      BuSpar Working / Worked
Best relief for 6 months until I had dry mouth so severe I couldn't drink enough water. Discontinued due to this side effect.
      Klonopin Not Working
HIGHLY ADDICTIVE. Worked to reduce anxiety, when I missed a dose one evening and slept in too late I got DELIRIUM TREMENS!!! AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!! If you must take a benzo take a long-acting medicine (Valium, Librium) and NEVER ABUSE THESE MEDS... repercussions are severe and you lose effectiveness. Alcohol in moderate quantities can cause blackouts with this med. MORE TROUBLE THAN ITS WORTH!!! See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_term_effects_of_benzodiazepines
      Lexapro Working / Worked
Worked OK. Couldn't handle the insomnia, severely delayed ejaculation and excessive thirst.
      Paxil Working / Worked
Worked great for 5 years. Started causing severely delayed ejaculation and insatiable thirst. Discontinued only due to side effects.
      Trazodone Working / Worked
Working great now for sleep. It's the only thing that allows me to get more than three hours in a row. I almost always get 7-8 hours of sleep with this med but feel groggy for 2 hours after waking.
      Valium Working / Worked
Started on this med to taper off of Klonopin, which was a disaster (accidental DT's!!). Worked great for the first year. Increasing side effects such as insomnia, paradoxical reaction ("wakes" me up in the morning), and increased sweating. Was like a zombie for the first 4 days of treatment until my body adjusted, so plan accordingly. I'm tapering off of this med now, I would only recommend for short term acute episodes. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_term_effects_of_benzodiazepines
      Zoloft Working / Worked
Worked OK. Couldn't handle the "speedy' feeling, delayed ejaculation and excessive thirst.
      Dilantin Working / Worked
Solid relief from anxiety. Was OK with dietary restrictions. I really liked this med until severe dry mouth set in. Discontinued due to this side effect.
      Lyrica Working / Worked
Anxiety was non-existent the first 2 months on 300 mg of Lyrica. Couldn't stay awake for the first week though :-) It began to increase anxiety shortly after dosing beginning a couple of months ago. I'm tapering off this med over the next month.
    • Open Hyperhidrosis

I've had HORRIBLE Hyperhidrosis since High School. My friends, family and girlfriends have all had to accept my clammy grasp. I have never found relief, it seems worse now than ever. Controlling anxiety helps a bit but not enough.

      Treatments

      Botulin Toxin Not Working
Had $1000 worth of Botox in my hands. Very painful, minimal results. Sweating decreased 20-30%. My insurance reimbursement for the treatment wasn't accepted by any doctors and I had to pay cash. I wouldn't do it again.
    • Open Depression
      Type: Clinical (Major) Depression

I've been dealing with depression and anxiety for over 15 years now. I still have bouts of major depression, but have been able to keep my mood positive easier the older I get. Anxiety has always been a bigger problem for me and an underlying cause of most of my depression.

      Treatments

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Working / Worked
This has been the most effective depression relief method for me.
      Effexor Working / Worked
Worked well for me, not so well for my girlfriend at the time. I lost most of my sex drive and ability. Stopped this med after a few months.
      Lexapro Working / Worked
Worked for a while... too many typical SSRI side effects developed.
      Paxil Working / Worked
Worked great for 5 years. Had to stop due to increasing/severe side effects. Dry mouth, severely delayed ejaculation.
      Psychotherapy Working / Worked
This has been the most effective depression relief method for me.
Support from Friends & Family Working / Worked
This has been the most effective depression relief method for me.
      Trazodone Working / Worked
Just started taking. Wonderful for sleep and my general mood is much improved. Working well so far.
      Zoloft Working / Worked
Worked OK. Had to stop due to increasing/severe side effects. Dry mouth, severely delayed ejaculation, insomnia, "speedy" feeling.
    • Open Insomnia

I have had some form of insomnia for the last 10 years. It has gotten worse, primarily due to medications I must take.

      Treatments

      Ambien Working / Worked
Worked years ago when my insomnia was very mild. Will only put me to sleep for 2-3 hours now. No longer use.
      Ativan Working / Worked
      Actually kept me awake?
      Counting Sheep Working / Worked
Bulls&*T! If this worked I wouldn't have the need to join this group :-)
      Dalmane Working / Worked
Tried recently. Worked for 1-2 nights then I would wake up every 3-4 hours. No longer use.
      Lunesta Working / Worked
Worked well for several months. Caused bitter taste in mouth, couldn't get more than 6 hours straight. Stopped working well recently (waking every 2-3 hours). No longer use unless I need short sleep without the grogginess of Trazodone.
      Meditation Working / Worked
Helps going to sleep, not staying asleep.
      Music Working / Worked
Helps going to sleep, not staying asleep.
      Reading Working / Worked
Helps going to sleep, not staying asleep.
      Rozerem Working / Worked
Worked great for a week. Then I started waking after 2-3 hours. This is great for falling asleep quickly. When I first took it, I had very restful sleep with no noticeable side-effects. I would recommend trying this first since it works using melatonin rather than being a sedative.
      Trazodone Working / Worked
This is what I take when needed (almost every night). Worked very well for the first several weeks 8-10 hours of restful sleep, but groggy in the morning. It still usually allows me to get 7-8 hours of sleep with a few minor interruptions, very groggy in the morning (100 mg). Worth the side effect for me.
