I am 40 years old and had my first attack of diverticulitis in december, it was accompanied by acute pain and fever and verified by a cat scan. Ten days of cipro & flagyl seemed to clear it up, but I had a repeat attack 4 weeks later(symptoms not as severe). That was treated with another round of antibiotics. I have had tenderness periodically since. A month ago I had a colonoscopy and at the follow-up visit, my doctor ordered another cat scan. A few days before the scan, the tenderness increased and I had a low grade fever which disappeared overnight. After I went for the second scan, the doctor called and said that it showed diverticulitis again. He asked if I wanted to be hospitalized, I didn't. Honestly, I am not feeling that badly right now. I have only a little bit of tenderness with no fever. He also recommended I consult a surgeon with a view toward having surgery 4-6 weeks out(once this bout is under control). Does this sound premature to be considering surgery? Especiallly since I really don"t feel so bad. Isn't there a chance that the antibiotics will clear this up this time? I am slightly confused and not sure what to do? Any advice?
