Radiation Mood
Thursday, August 27, 2009 | A General Update story

I just finished number 8 of 25 radiation treatments.

I am having symptoms that I did not anticipate having until later into the treatment plan.   I spoke to the nurse today and she said that it is generally true for these symptoms to come later but there are others who are more sensitive to the radiation.   She gave me some diet tips for the diarreah and told me about a cream I can use for the dry, itching vaginal area.  The nausea she tells me is likely from errant radiation touching my digestive system.   As for the fatigue, there is not a lot I can do.  I might change my appointments for later in the afternoon as the fatigue really hits after the treatment and I rest/sleep all day, then I am restless at night.  I have been having radiation at 7:30am.  She set up an appointment for me to see the doctor tomorrow (my normal appointment was cancelled yesterday) and I will take some of these issues to him.  All in all,  the symptoms are tolerable and maybe some of them can be managed.

    Dodi-
Sorry that you're having some side-effects . . . and I had promised you that radiation was no big deal.

I never had fatigue, so I am sorry that I blind-sided you on that.

I really laughed at what you were eating - some denial on possible effects? Anyway, at least I warned you on that one! Truly a mild diet is a life-saver. It will make you feel a lot better.

I had some irritation for 2 days in my rectum, but it went away and wasn't really bad. It was just that I never "noticed" that I had a separate "part" there until I actually felt it be sensitive! I also had some general pelvic pain for 2 days at the beginning, but that dispersed quickly and we never knew why I had it.

My doctor kept quizzing me on symptoms, but since I really had none after the first week, he gave up and was just glad that it went well.

Give yourself a break and take it easy so you get through this. I am here cheering you on. I check on your blog and follow your successes. I am really glad that you decided to do everything you can to knock out this devistating disease.

    All the best,
    Jane

Dodi, I too am sorry you are having some side effects...everyone is different. I guess I was lucky the only symptom I had was diarreah and some nausea near the end of the treatment. I never had skin irritation at all or the fatigue. It will pass I'm sure as the treatment continues.....just remember NO PRUNES!! hahaha

I'm really sorry, as well, to hear you're having issues with side effects you weren't expecting quite yet. As always...sending prayers up in your name! :)
