Close Alopecia Areata
I am 45 yrs. old & have had repeated episodes of alopecia areata beginning with my 1st at age 13. Although there is some dispute on what causes it; my episodes have ALWAYS occurred after an extremely stressful event in my life. I have had approx. 20 large shiny bald spots appear 1 at a time over the years. The dermatologist always injected the area with lots of steroid shots and the area would eventually grow back but thinner. Last episode approx. 10 months ago; unfortunately I am about due!
Close Depression
Type: Clinical (Major) DepressionHave dealt with major depression and anxiety ever since I can remember. I sometimes sink deeper than others; but depression always recurs after remission periods. Am currently seeing a psych. now; I have tried almost every anti depressant known to man; can't find a perfect one. After a while, I become immune to the boost; and depression creeps back in; but I am still trying... Hanging in....
Treatments
- Celexa Somewhat Helpful
- Didn't take it long enough to evaluate.
- Cymbalta Not Working
- Horrible, terrifying reaction. I developed some type of amnesia; could not read or put together sentences; it was like it chipped away at my brain and I have never been so frightened in my life. RUN don't walk. I NEVER had any such crazy side effects from any other meds. I even believe it triggered some abusive memories from my childhood; but i am not sure if they are accurate or just a medicine related delusion...SCARY drug.
- Desipramine Working / Worked
- Liked it; but short term memory started to fade and I was getting confused (more than normal! lol)
- Effexor Somewhat Helpful
- One of my favorites, have now been put on Pristiq, too soon to tell
- Lexapro Somewhat Helpful
- Limited help; caused my teeth to grind too much; discontinued
- Paxil Somewhat Helpful
- Made me very sleepy and caused weight gain; discontinued
- Positive Thinking Somewhat Helpful
- I am a big believer in happy, positive thoughts; but sometimes I just can't shake the blues; apparently it's chemical imbalance, not just state of mind. I do continue to try to think positively....
- Prozac Somewhat Helpful
- Effects didn't last long; depression came back after a few months; discontinued
- Psychotherapy Working / Worked
- It's always helpful to have someone to bounce your thoughts off of and to vent your frustrations...also, you can let your crazy out because they see crazy all day! lol
- Support from Friends & Family Somewhat Helpful
- It's always great to have supportive friends or family; but sometimes they do not understand. People that have not experienced major depression usually think you just need to shrug it off and it's just not that easy! lol
- Trazodone Too Soon to Tell
- I am getting ready to start taking this at night for my dangerous sleepwalking and sleep eating; I am excited to try this and desperate because I keep getting injurred due to sleepwalking; very bizarre things happen to me at night! lol.
- Wellbutrin Somewhat Helpful
- Mood improved but blood pressure spiked; bad reaction; too bad because I heard it controls appetites! oh well....
- Writing Working / Worked
- A good release!!
- Zoloft Working / Worked
- One of my favorites; but discontinued due to uncontrollable yawning; and limited effect after a few months.

Have suffered with total body chronic pain (including trigger points) for over ten yrs. after a hysterectomy. Chronic fatigue from sleep disorders (sleepwalking & sleepeating) and REM behavioral disorder. I have not gotten this under control and for this and systemic lupus, I am on disability.
Treatments
- Adderall Working / Worked
- Works for energy. But pain persists. So didn't keep up use.
- Cyclobenzaprine Not Working
- Only knocked me out. Discontinued.
- Cymbalta Not Working
- HORRIBLE reaction. Scary drug made me have sort of an amnesia state; confused; could not understand what people were saying ; could not read; thoughts were bizarre; very frightening
- Duragesic Patch Working / Worked
- works with everyday chronic pain but not with any severe pain, so I have lots of break through pain and severe sleep disorder problems which leave me unable to function.
- Effexor Working / Worked
- Helps mood but not pain. Good for depression.
- Guaifenesin Not Working
- No improvement. Discontinued.
- Heat Working / Worked
- Helps, but only temporary. I like those theramacare pads at the drugstore that you can wear under your clothes for 8 hours. Cool!
- Lyrica Working / Worked
- Has been extremely helpful with fibro chronic pain and with debilitating fatigue. Has given me some enery back ! I love this med. but I am currently suffering with 3 slipped discs, so am in pain for that. But thumbs up for lyrica!
- Neurontin Somewhat Helpful
- Notas helpful as lyrica with nerve or chronic pain; and no help for fatigue like lyrica.
- Ultram Not Working
- DIscontinued due to no result. Didn't help my pain and made me even sleepier.
- Vitamin B12 Not Working
- I think that only helps with energy if you are deficient of the vitamin. If not, it will not improve your underlying med. problem causing the fatigue.
- Zanaflex Working / Worked
- No help for pain, but did relas me enough to get me to fall asleep, but soon wake up due to leg pain and rem behavioral disorder. Limited help for muscles.
