Today is the first day of my genetically engineered life! I had my first dose of the biologic drug, Humira. It will hopefully switch off my t-cells that are producing the inflammatory changes that are taking place, my goodness they have been very busy the last few months. I've read as much as I can on Humira, how it works, how its administered, what the side-effects are, who should/shouldn't take it etc - my brain is just about overloaded.
I worry about the adverse impact it might have, but that is a big MIGHT right now. So I have to focus on the good its' going to do me instead. I obligingly wrote my goals in the Humira diary - I want to be able to walk, garden, write, sleep, work, and complete simple tasks without having constant, sometimes severe pain. I hope I am going to be able to have some of my old life back, stand upright, run/jump and be the old me.
It's like an angel sits on one shoulder saying " All will be fine, it will fix everything, you will soon feel well again, you will have your old life back again and you wont have all the pain and immobility and stiffness. Go forward, it's OK".
Then the little devil on the other shoulder pipes up and says " Ha, get real, what are your odds. 66% if your're lucky. Who would put their life-savings on those odds? Get over it, your're going to be like this for the rest of your days - suffer like the rest of us".
In the meantime "Harry Humira" the genetic engineer who was injected into me today is going about his job. I just hope he's expertly qualified, knows what he's doing and has previous experience of working on a model like me!

I imagine a boxing match: "In the right corner, Harry Humira, with his trademark needle jab to the abdomen. In the left corner, Rheumatoid Arthur; we never know when or where or how badly he will try to pummel the body. Let's hope Harry's jab takes down Arthur's Antibody Attack before the final round!"

Don't worry about a thing, harry humeria has been a champion and has good fight statistics, i am sure he knows his job and i am sure soon you will have a new post talking about his great victory.

I've been on Humira over a year now. I take it once a week and when I was also on methotrexate at the same time as the Humira they did a great job keeping the pain and deformities at bay. It took awhile for the Humira to "load" in my system about two months (at one injection every 2 weeks). I hope you see some great results asap...hugs jilly
