  Hi,
  Methadone is much stronger and longer lasting than hydrocodone (Vicodin.) I had success with Opana ER for long-acting pain control, but can't afford it now because of insurance issues. I am now on Oramorph (morphine) for long-acting pain control. That works just as well. Dilaudids also work well for me. I take hydrocodone for breakthrough pain (short-acting.) You may need a combo of long and short-acting meds. These terms describe how much time the med works for. Methadone and Avinza (morphine) work 20-24 hrs, Opana and Oramorph work 12 hrs, Dilaudid 9 hrs, and hydro and oxy 3-4 hrs. I take Oramorph twice a day so I'm covered for a whole day. I also have fibro + DDD + arthritis.
