I am fairly new here and just learning to navigate. I read your April journal and wanted to comment. THANK YOU! That is how I feel. I also live in VA and got custody pretty much the same way you did. It was and remains a choice 5 years later, a good choice for all involved.
My husband is disabled so he is the stay home dad and I work full time. We have 3 other grandkids from my oldest daughter and now another one from daughter of the one we have. I have worries about that one too but different hubby different situation so we are just keeping an eye on things (he is 7 mos old now).
Is it how I thought my life would be at 50, no way, would I change it, no way. We have learned and grown with the gc in ways we did not with our now grown children and it is better for us, our kids and ALL of the grandkids.

Close Grandparents Raising Children
My daughter, had her son in April of this year. By May, I/we had taken custody at the father's request for his safety. I was married in June of 2008. In August of 2008, my husband and I filed for legal custody. Currently I am raising a 12, 11 and 7 month old; as well as being a new wife. I'm stay at home, because of the disability, and most days I'm thankful that I am able to do that.
