    • About Me

I have been married to the same wonderful guy since 1993 (we were engaged just seven hours after we met!) and we have a beautiful millenium baby girl (born in 2000). I am unable to work due to symptoms of MS. I have severe osteoarthritis in my knees, especially the left one; polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS); sleep apnea; hyperparathyroidism; hypothyroidism; and migraines.

I am a Christian of the Lutheran variety (big surprise in NW Iowa!). I grew up in the heart of Minnesota among the norwegians and germans. Uff da! Church involvement is very important to me. I spend most of my time with my family, watching movies, reading or just hanging out. I am also an avid crocheter/yarnie.

    • Little Love

      From Tacklems April 27

Anytime you need a friend If you're lonely And need a friend And troubles seem like They never end, Just remember to keep the Faith, And Love will be there to Light the Way Anytime you need a friend, I will be here. You'll never be alone again, So don't you fear. Even if you're miles away, I'm by your side. So don't you ever be lonely. Love will make it alright. When the shadows are closing in And your Spirit deminishing, Just remember you're not alone, And Love will be there To Guide you Home. (Chorus) If you just believe in me, I will Love you endlessly. Take my hand. Take me into your Heart. I'll be there forever, baby. I won't let go. I'll never let go. Anytime you need a friend, I will be here. You'll never be alone again, So don't you fear. Even if your miles away, I'm by your side. So don't you ever be lonely. It's alright. It's alright.

Thanks, Marta. This was rough going, especially when the Dr. was looking for a tumor. Kidney infections and stones are worse than labor. But I was so relieved about the tumor and that the stones had psssed. Thank you for your kind thoughts. Bea

    • Close Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
      Type: Relapsing-remitting MS

I was diagnosed in September 2008 after a severe attack. In hindsight, I have identified other attacks that I had written off to other, minor, temporary problems.

      Treatments

      Copaxone Working / Worked
so far no change on MRI, no attacks since starting in Feb 2009
      Neurontin Working / Worked
Makes my pain much more manageable.
      Physical Therapy Working / Worked
I have had two weeks of pt, and I do feel stronger, and more balanced.
      Prednisone Working / Worked
I have had IV steroids and oral steroids. I started with three days of one hour IV treatments followed by four days of oral prednisone. The next week I had two more days by IV, then the next week three days by IV. The last day was two weeks ago, and I am just starting to see improvement in the last week. The worst side effect was a taste of dirty pennies for a full day after treatment, as well as major insomnia. I only slept 2-3 hours at a time while on the drug.
      Provigil Working / Worked
Helps with fatigue; I don't sleep all day.
      Rebif Working / Worked
I was on Rebif for three months. The number and size of lesions in my brain decreased by half during that time. However, depression was a major side effect for me so I switched to copaxone.
      Solumedrol Working / Worked
Since it reduces inflammation, it seems to help me get through flare ups better and quicker.
    • Close Migraine Headaches

I have had migraines for several years. Sometimes think it could be related to elevated parathyroid hormone and blood calcium levels, as they eased up for a while after parathyroidectomy. Levels are up again, migraines are back.

      Treatments

      Caffeine Somewhat Helpful
Diet Coke/Pepsi to wash down the Excedrin. I'm an addict, so have to have my regular fix, or I get a migraine from too little or too much.
      Excedrin Working / Worked
I take a generic version from Walmart. Have to eat with it or it makes me woozy. I take two tablets.
      Imitrex Not Working
Didn't work, just made me sleepy.
      Tylenol Not Working
doesn't help on its own. in excedrin works great.
      Sleep Working / Worked
Once I take the excedrin and drink some diet cola I lay down to sleep for at least two hours.
    • Open Sleep Apnea

Diagnosed July 08 as part of polycystic ovarian syndrome.

      Treatments

      CPAP Not Working
I got too claustrophobic with straps around the back of my head and a mask over mouth and nose.
      Lose Weight Not Working
I have PCOS, which makes it almost impossible to lose weight without the help of drugs which had the unfortunate side effect of giving me terrible diarrhea and nausea.
      Oxygen Too Soon to Tell
The doctor wants me set up with oxygen at night havent started it yet.
    • Open Arthritis

I have had osteoarthritis in my left knee since age 15. Three surgeries since age 18. Hoping for a replacement knee before age 50.

      Treatments

      Ibuprofen Working / Worked
minimum of 600 mg, up to four times per day. no side effects yet.
      Lodine Somewhat Helpful
works about the same as ibuprofen, so stopped taking it.
      Naproxen Not Working
      never did anything for me
Surgery, Knee Replacement Working / Worked
had a meniscectomy/mosaicplasty in 2005, helped immensely. no grinding and a lot less pain. still hoping to qualify for a replacement by the time I am 50.
      Tylenol Not Working
      never helped.
    • Open Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

Suspected since 2006, brought it up with my pcp in 2007, he said it could be, but the only treatment is diet and exercise. In 2008, I had surgery to remove a parathyroid gland and the surgeon, hearing my story, referred me to a reproductive endocrinologist for a definitive diagnosis. Since being diagnosed with MS in fall 2008 I have not been dealing with my PCOS.

      Treatments

      Metformin Not Working
wasn't able to get up to the full dose due to diarrhea constantly. When I was diagnosed with MS, I quit the glucophage completely.
    • Open GERD & Heartburn

my doctor believes my reflux is due to the many medications I take as well as the great amount of diet colas I drink. I have had it for about six or seven months at a severe level.

      Treatments

      Antacids Not Working
the pain got too bad for the tums to help
      Prilosec Working / Worked
not a bit of pain since starting it
