    • Close Cirrhosis

My husband is a heart transplant patient and after getting his new heart it was discovered that some of the heart medications he had to take to keep him alive cause cirrhosis. He has a TIPS, suffers frequently from severe bouts of encelopathy. Take Xifaxin and Lactulose to help control the situation but it doesn't always work. Since my husband got the TIPS he has been "off" never back to himself but when he has a bout of the severe encelopathy he does really ugly things.

      Treatments

      Lactulose Working / Worked
My husband takes at least 120 grams a day and sometimes that isn't enough. Sometime it makes him sick at his stomach but it is a necessary evil. We are creative with how we mix it to help him get it down.
      Xifaxan Working / Worked
Without the Xifaxan my husband does really bad must use it in combination with lactulose to achieve somewhat desired results.

      Treatments

      Cellcept Working / Worked
      Didn't need after several months.
      Gancyclovir Working / Worked
Worked but killed the RBC - a real problem..took months to recover but it was necessary since it was given for a severe case of CMV
      Prograf Working / Worked
Works great -- no side effects
      Valcyte Working / Worked
Stopped taking after a couple of months.
