Tis the season....for what? Has anyone been listening to the news and all since Thanksgiving? I am still in shock from the news stories about the store security guard who was trampled and killed because eager Black Friday shoppers broke down the doors to the store and ran over him. Ok, I am 48 years old, closer to 49. I have seen idiocy in all its myriad forms, and been its victim a time or two as well, but this takes the cake. Is that wii so important that a man's life means nothing? Is it of such vital importance to save a couple of bucks that a human life is of no consequence if it stands between the shopper and the interior of a big box store?
My roommate and I went grocery shopping in the wee hours of Black Friday, hoping to avoid the crowds. No such luck. People jammed the local Wally-Weird (Wal-Mart) easily three hours before the sales were due to begin. They milled around skids of shrink wrapped merchandise like cattle in the final stages of mad cow disease. To make matters worse, many women brought their young children out into the fray. These little demons perched in the front of shopping carts like Roman soldiers in chariots, bound for war. Moms and offspring had the same crazed, frantic look in their eyes as they prowled the aisles, never giving an ince to and elderly person, or someone in a wheelchair. I swear, the kids' pupils had been repalced with dollar signs as their eyes locked on every bright package they saw. There were some minor causalties, in the form of a cut hand when one woman snatched a printer box out of the hands of another, and some torn clothing as shopping carts were propelled through the store with scant regard for safe speeds, or pedetrian traffic. After seeing that all the vital items were secured, I opted to go sit in the car and be cold and out of the fray. The actions of these people made me ashamed to be a human. I know for a fact many of these people call themselve "right to lifers", "good Christians" and "neighbors" and yet they needed only a few more in numbers to recreate a scene similar to that which took a man's life in another store.
I think the rabid shoppers who trampled that security guard, and deprived his family and friends of their loved one should not only be charged with murder, in criminal court, but with wrongful death in civil court as well. For the rest of their lives, they should wear a brand or a sign of some sort that says " I am an idiot...I killed a man just to be one of the first to save a few dollars on a...with the product they wanted emblazened on the sign. For the rest of their stupid lives, they should be reminded that they put a cheap assed piece of merchandise above the life of a fellow human being. And next year, when they want to shop, they should be forced to wear bright red vest, with flashing lights or something, to warn other shoppers that they will literally kill for a good bargain.

I am with you on this. I also blame the media which goes into a frenzy with holiday "news" raising the furor of "Black Friday" to a fever pitch.
And it isn't just about the "low" price (although this year price is a big consideration). Often times it's all about being the first to own something - as if that is a true gauge of one's value - or it's about being one who is able to secure a product that is in short supply. (Nevermind that that the short supply is due to "holding back" products coupled with advertising an item as being in short supply just to entice the buyers.)
More and more I've come to believe that humans truly are headed for destruction - but it won't be Mother Nature that takes us out... It will be Human Nature.
Just as well, maybe the next species will be have a high percentage of intelligent beings.
Gotta say, sure seems like the 80/20 rule applies today. 80% of ppl are reasonable intelligent. 20% are not.

I like the way you write, lady. It wasn't a humorous topic but you made me laugh nonetheless. As soon as I heard that news, I couldn't get it out of my head all day. What a way to go!
Have you noticed how shopping has become some measure of patriotism? Spend, spend, spend or else we'll all be doomed, DOOMED I SAY DOOMED!
It boggles the mind.
