Training Your Dog to Wait Mood
Friday, October 24, 2008

Once you have got your favourite pet home, you need to give him some basic training lessons. Training your dogs is an absolute must. It obviously makes him a civilized animal capable of living in a civilized society. Training your dog also helps in bonding with your dog. The more you put him under a training process, the more will he understand you. It will also help you in understanding your dog as well. Dog Training is a two way process. But the key to any training is that it should be fun and interesting. Earlier dogs were mostly trained for special tasks like hunt birds, herd sheep, work with fireman and find rodents. But now most dogs have become ornamental pieces, with hardly any task to do. They bark, chew or sleep most of the day which is not healthy. Training is essential as it helps build his confidence. Though it is advisable to have a professional trainer train your dog, you too can train your dog in some basic manners, good behaviour and some fun tricks.

One of the important aspects of training is to train your dog to wait. There must have been times when you wanted your puppy to wait, only to find out that he doesn’t want to wait. Teaching your puppy to wait is a very challenging exercise as your dog can get easily distracted. Most dogs are energetic and therefore understanding the wait command might be difficult for them to comprehend. Wait doesn’t mean your dog have to be absolutely still. It means they should learn not to go past a certain limit. For example, you can ask your dog to “wait” in the living room while you go to the kitchen. He should know that he can move around the living room but he should not leave the living area. Here are some simple tricks to teach your dog to wait. There are some tips on how you can teach your dog to wait.

Have your dog on a short leash and let him walk to the front door. Using the leash becomes important when your dog doesn’t obey the wait command. Quickly open the door a little and sneak out while your dog remains inside. The leash would be hanging in the middle of the two of you.

Use the sit command first as a dog will remain inactive longer than if he is in a standing position.

Open the door slowly and show your palm in a stop position and say wait. Your dog might want to come out as he doesn’t know the command well and try hard to push the door. So, don’t be disappointed by his behaviour.

Close the door immediately when your dog starts to move. Now you can see how your dog reacts. The second time you try the same trick, he might push the door only a little bit.

Practice makes not only a man perfect but a dog too. Teaching your dog to wait might take a longer time than teaching him the sit and standing command. Patience on your part will help your dog learn the command.
