    • About Me

I'm a newlywed having just married the love of my life less than a year ago, last Thanksgiving. We started our married life with me having health problems, guess that's what in sickness and health means. My story begins with surgery on August 18, 2008. I had to have an abdominal myomectomy because a sonogram showed I had 5 very large fibroid tumors in my uterus. My surgery turned out to be 5 hours instead of 1-2 hours because I had several fibroids that were the size of cantaloupes and I also had a large ovarian cyst. I lost a lot of blood in surgery and was in recovery for over 6 hours because the general anesthesia didn’t wear off in my left leg. I was in the hospital for 5 days following my surgery but was up and walking the very next day. I was progressing nicely for the next week and then on September 1st I woke up and had pain when I breathed deeply. I didn’t know what it was and assumed it would go away. By that night it was much worse so my husband took me to the ER. It turns out I had a cluster of PE’s in my left lung and a cluster of PE's and a larger PE in my right lung. I was immediately put on lovenox (a blood thinner shot), and admitted to the cardiac ICU and put on a heart monitor and oxygen. I was then taken in to have an echocardiogram (ultrasound) of my heart to ensure that when the blood clots passed by my heart they did not cause any damage. While in the hospital they discovered that I was very anemic from my surgery and had to be put on an iron IV drip to bring my iron levels up.On the second day in the hospital I had an ultrasound of my legs and they found a large DVT in my right leg. By the 5th day I was able to go home. I was home recovering for the last 3 months from my major abdominal surgery since my incision was from my belly button all the way down and will take even longer to heal being on blood thinner. After about two weeks of being on warfarin, my eye swelled up and the persistent rash I have had got a lot worse. My hematologist thought I was allergic to warfarin and so I was put back on lovenox. After 14 days on the twice a day lovenox injections they determined it was not an allergic reaction to warfarin (my rash came back while not on it) and so I was able to bridge to coumadin. Thankfully the rash has gone away now, the blood blisters on my heels that I got from surgery have healed, my INR is stable and the PE's did not affect my heart. I've also learned that my gigantic fibroids grew because of the estrogen in my birth control pill and that my DVT and PE's also came from being on the pill and having had surgery. Its been a long, scary and educational road, but I thank God each day that my life was spared and I trust Him to help me through all of this.
