I have been out of the hospital since Sept 11; and am still on limited mobility. I had 15-20 clots in boths my lungs and they never found where they came from. I give you this backgroud so you can compare for your father. Limited mobility to me is trying to keep my pulse under 100 beats a minutes. I know that sounds like a high number but I couldn't even walk across the room without my pulse getting around 140. My doctors believe because I wasn't treated for 3-4 weeks into my symtoms of PE that I have developed this current problem. My doctors thought I had chronic fatigue syndrome and told me to go to bed and rest(which is the worst thing to do for blood clots). My shortness of breathe started about a 4-5 days before I went to the ER for it; I didn't go sooner because I thought it was CFS. By the time I finally with to the ER I was so out of breathe that I couldn't hardly talk. Since then, my pulmonary dr has put me on Klonapin to bring my pulse down so I can do more. I can cook now and do lite chores around the house. I even can drive now and because I have a handicap tag I can go pick up a few grocies when I need to. The Klonapin has really helped regulate my pulse so I can be more active. Because I have so many clots I can't bend over or lift to much weight to prevent pressure to build up in my lungs. I still get pretty tired in the afternoon; but am regaining some of my strength now! I can also do some upper body weights(only 1 lb. though)now; and SOME yoga. I am making some progress!!
I had one three inch bruise while I was in the hospital that I got hitting something. Anyway, the dr's drew a line around it with a pen everyday to see how much it would spread. The bruise got really hard with a couple of big lumps in it. The dr's did't seem to worried about it though; I was still on heprin. I still have one little lump after five weeks? I'm sure your dads bruise will be ok as well. They put you on a pretty heavy duty dose of heprin that stays in your system a little while. He should be covered.
All in all I am very thankful that I am alive and almost each day gets better. I have hope even though the dr's don't know where the clots came from and if they will come back.
The hardest part for me is my husband works out of town alot. That was pretty scary trying to figure out if I have a problem, how do I get help. I now have all my neighbors numbers and EMS numbers by my bed. Also, I have a garage door opener by my bed in case I have a problem and can't get out of bed to let someone in. Being pro-active has helped me not be so afraid.
You're father is very blessed to have a son that cares like you do! I believe your dad is in good hands, the dr's took my blood every six hours to monitor it and adapt my treatment according to the blood results. Have faith my friend!
