    • Interests

Love animals, especially cats (my dear one passed in 2006, still miss her!) Enjoy people of all ages and backgrounds, kind of an unpaid social worker and confessor. Like to read, write, go on the Net, dining out (especially Italian or Chinese), speak a bit of Spanish, love the culture and the macho.

    • Close Diets & Weight Maintenance

Obesity has been major at times, finally diagnosed as hypothyroid. Have learned excellent nutrition. Body image and morale need to be lifted, as well as my butt! LOL

      Treatments

      Atkins Diet Working / Worked
It worked for me when I was young but not after the age of 40. It is also not healthy to cut out almost all carbs.
      Counting Calories Working / Worked
Whether you count calories, or call them Weight Watcher POINTS, it amounts to the same thing. You have a limit and you are keeping track. Very important!
Eating Healthier Foods Working / Worked
There is no gimmick or expensive supplement that will substitute for basic good nutrition and will power.
      Herbalife Not Working
Tried it, and in my opinion it's a scam. Supplements also contained ephedra, later found to be dangerous.
      Hoodia Not Working
Not helpful. With these unregulated supplements, you can't even be sure you're getting the real thing!
      Weight Watchers Working / Worked
This is what works for me. Counting the points. Am doing it alone at home.
    • Close Hypothyroidism

I became obese at the age of 16, and it only got worse. I told doctors I was NOT OVEREATING, but they didn't believe me. My weight kept climbing to dangerous levels, and they still didn't believe me. Finally I had a heart attack. Since being on Synthroid I have lost about 100 lbs., but am still obese. I also have severe shoulder pain which sometimes is related to hypothyroidism. I still cannot eat like other normal people can.

      Treatments

      Synthroid Working / Worked
Synthroid has helped, but as I said, I still am obese, just less so. I can't eat like normal people can. Had some hair loss, but don't know if it was from thyroid itself, OR from the Synthroid.
    • Open Healthy Relationships

It's been a long time since I fell in love. Want to learn all I can about healthy relationships so that next time I get into one!!

    • Open Chronic Pain

After an overdose which harmed my nervous system, I developed peripheral neuropathy (which diabetics also get). Symptoms include foot and leg always "asleep", feeling heavy as a log, or as if my foot and leg are in a plaster cast. Very unpleasant 24/7. Also suffer intense chronic pain in shoulders which is horrible, can hardly dress self. Arthritis is part of it, inflammation from food additives and certain foods exacerbates the pain.

      Treatments

      Cymbalta Working / Worked
Cymbalta has been wonderful for depression and appetite suppression, but no help with pain.
      Heat Working / Worked
After a real hot shower, my shoulder pain is helped a little.
      Naproxen Not Working
Aleve, Motrin, other NSAID's, even when prescription strength do not help much. Two aspirin at BEDTIME helps a little.
      Neurontin Considering
Dr. recommended Neurontin for my peripheral neuropathy, but I'm already on 2 psych meds and do not want to add an epilepsy drug like Neurontin!
    • Open Healthy Eating

My eating habits were never terrible, but I realized I needed to add a lot more veggies (tho I don't like them). Good news is that peas and beans are legumes and not fattening as I was told as a child. They are very low in fat and high in fiber. Boiled potatoes (without a lot of fat added) are also filling and nutritious. Of course I eat carrots and spinach!
