I'm a wife, a mother of 2 sons, a grand and great grandmother and I have 5 siblings. I suffer from depression and manic depression. The mania has been well controlled for some time now. I have uncontrolled high blood pressure and ulcerative colitis and am pre-diabetic. I have had breast cancer in both breasts and have just made myself very sad by reading what I have listed.(kidding) My faith rules my life.

Close Bipolar Disorder
I have been bipolar for many many years. When the symptoms first became manic instead of just depression I had been on steroid medication which just blew my mind into a cycle of mania that I thought would never end and that I had lost my mind forever and could never recover. I was hospitalized several times for it and I have tried just about every kind of medication there is and it took me a long long time before we (psychiatrist and me) found the right combo with the least side effects!
Treatments
- Depakote Not Working
- It didn't work and I had too many side effects.
- Lexapro Working / Worked
- Im taking in conjunction with other meds and it is working. I take 1 pill a day.
- Seroquel Not Working
- Topamax Working / Worked
- I take topamax along with other meds and have been holding steady with my moods
- Wellbutrin Working / Worked
- Wellbutrin has been a significant part of my medical history (in conjunction with others) in dealing with my bipolar symptoms
- Xanax Working / Worked
- Xanax helps me to sleepI use to take 4 a day for anxiety attacks but now I only take one a night to help me sleep and if I ever get a bad anxiety attack during the day which I hardly ever do!
- Zyprexa Working / Worked
- I take Zyprexa only when I start to experience mania type symptoms and so far it has done well at holding them off.
Close Breast Cancer
At 49 a routine mammo(which my sister nagged me into getting) showed some microcalcifications which turned out to be ca. I had a lumpectomy done but after the tests on that came back my doctor went ahead and did a partial mastectomy followed by 6 wks. of radiation. 1 year later at my yearly mammo they found the same thing in my other breast in more than 1 area so a full mastectomy was decided on. I had reconstructive surgery started at the same time as the mastectomy and am very happy I did.
Treatments
- Mastectomy Working / Worked
- Partial mastectomy on one side and full on the other a year later. Shocked both times but was treated wonderful and fully informed and given different choices and options. I feel very blessed for that.
- Radiotherapy Working / Worked
- I had radiation on the breast that had only a partial mastectomy. It's been 6 yrs. and I'm still cancer free so it must be working. I was very tired during radiation but to tell the truth I talked to GOD a lot while under those huge machines and I felt an odd sort of contentment during the whole process. My family was my rock and my faith the foundation. I had sunburning for a while and it was in the exact grid that they patterned out. Living close to the hosp. made it easy for me to commute.
- Reconstructive Surgery Working / Worked
- I'm very glad this was an option for me and I had reconstruction on both sides. I'm so happy I did. I still get moments of sadness and depression but I count my blessings that it was caught early for me and that the reconstruction left me feeling better about myself.
- Surgery Working / Worked
- I had a lumpectomy at first which had to be followed-up by a paartial mastectomy and radiation.
