I think I need a dog.... Mood
Thursday, October 2, 2008 | A Positive story
I've been thinking tonight after reading so many encouraging words that I am in a depression which I know is not good for my health and recovery from my surgeries. Although I had to move 17 hours back to NM for my surgeries and recovery I still am alone almost all the time and emotionally I am completely alone here in my thoughts until I found this web site. I think that getting a small dog may help. I think it would force me to get out despite the physical pain and walk as well as play and it may fulfill the mothering instinct that I have since the ability was taken away with my hysterectomy this past July. I also feel like if I had someone that relies on me everyday that I will get out of bed and eventually be able to drive again. If I get a dog that does not shed like a cocka-poo or multi-poo or multese or shit-zu than they will be small enough for me to lift and also won't require constantly cleaning of hair. I think I need this in my life...now to find a dog and convince the family that it will be good for me.

Feeling alone is a real downer. I was feeling alone until I came her. Understanding is what I needed and I got that. Gd does screw with your head, my hubby that it was all in my head and frankly so did I. My favorite saying is " graves disease hasnt given me an excuse for anything, it has given me a reason for eveything" I think getting a dog is a good thing is you feel u can handle it. They are very healing. Hope you are feeling better.

I'm sorry that you are feeling down and going through the things you are going through. So I'll focus on your desire to get a dog. I will say, if you want a little dog that doesn't shed much, a shitzhu is a wonderful choice. My shitzhu is about 10 years old, and doesn't seem any different to me as she did at 3. They have really good life expectancy. They are very mild, very loving, very affectionate. She is very healthy, and is super cheap to feed, lol, so that is always a plus. They love to get out, she likes walking and car rides sticking her little head out. They are super friendly, so you'd be able to bring her everywhere with you. And they seem to like being around other dogs, so it would get you out to a dog park every now and then. But they are perfectly content to lay in bed with you all day if that's all you can muster. She can get very playful, but it's not physically tiring to play with her as it would bigger dogs, she likes tug of war but she's only 16 pounds. And she's just as happy to snuggle on my lap. If you're looking for a dog to be maternal with, shitzhus are great for that. Also, unlike other small dogs, shitzhus do not have the barking tendency other "yippy" dogs have. And when she does bark, it isn't the same ear screeching sound. To be honest, I grew up with large dogs and was never a fan of small dogs. I don't know if I would want any other small dogs other than a shitzhu. I expect that she will not be my only one in my life. They are known to be great dogs for nursing homes and the such because of their demeanor so I would highly recommend one.

Good luck to you and I hope you feel better.
