A hard pill to swallow Mood
Thursday, February 19, 2009

No, I'm not talking about any of my medications.  I mean the California state budget: higher sales taxes and vehicle license fees for all!  The federal government is trying to bail us out of the recession, and the state just drilled a couple more holes in our boat.  Oh, well (since I'm a silver-lining-type person), at least a 12-cent gasoline tax is NOT part of the deal, and people who are due refunds on their state tax returns will actually receive a check instead of an IOU.

I'm not normally one who stresses about stuff I can't control, but I am worried about the economy.  My husband has a good job, but his main client just cut its budget 30%.  The client PMs like my husband, but there's always a chance that there won't be enough work, and we really depend on his health insurance.

I try to stay positive because my husband tends to see the dark cloud.  I remind him--and myself--that we're really blessed: our kids are great, we have a home, our monthly mortgage payment is reasonable (and fixed), we have some savings not in a 401(k), and my RA seems to be stable.

Did they finally pass the budget? My wife works for a junior college as a grant writer, and has already seen state funds dry up. Everybody's waiting for the deadly details. There will be layoffs and cutbacks. Without her job and insurance, we're goners. I don't like taxes that hover like smog over the general masses, because that's where money is needed. However, unlessa budget is reality, and confidence in the economy is restored, the boat will since. It's ironic that as property values drop, we feel the reverse effects of Prop 13, which was felt good with rising values. If you have to file estimated payments, or even if you don't, credit any refund to next year's tax payments. That way, you'll get immediate "use" of that money. You can temporarily reduce withholding to compensate. Good luck.

It is scary and we need to be cautious on where we spend our money. I pray that things will start improving soon. Too many people are losing their jobs. Glad the RA is stable.
