    • About Me

Stereotypical depressed writer, only with more depression and less writing. My friends say I have really bad luck. I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Thalassemia minor, diffuse alopecia areata, polycystic ovarian syndrome, major depressive disorder, Complex PTSD, tinnitus, and possible lupus. Despite all of that, though, I'm really fun at parties.

    • Close Alopecia Areata

I have diffuse alopecia areata, which I guess is quite rare. Diagnosis not confirmed, but diffuse AA is the most likely suspect. I have had it since age 10, and I've lost over 80% of my hair.

      Treatments

      Acceptance Working / Worked
Well, what else can I do?
      Rogaine Not Working
      Did absolutely nothing.
    • Close Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

      Treatments

      Art Somewhat Helpful
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Too Soon to Tell
Seems to be working, but I haven't yet had a chance to put it in action. Also, I'm inconsistent with therapy due to financial constraints.
      Guided Imagery Not Working
      Paxil Not Working
I only took it for two days, and it made me horribly, horribly ill. The room was spinning and I couldn't walk straight or hold my eyes open.
      Psychotherapy Somewhat Helpful
      Helps, but I'm too poor.
      Reading Working / Worked
      Talking Somewhat Helpful
      Zoloft Working / Worked
Worked for a couple of years, then stopped.
    • Open Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

Diagnosed with PCOS in 2003. I've always had normal androgens despite having horrible symptoms. I had to have a unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (laparotomy) in 2006 because of a 15cm (benign) tumor.

      Treatments

      Metformin Working / Worked
Well, it worked at first. I've been on it over 5 years now, and I've started having problems again.
      Oral Contraceptives Considering
I tried Desogen, which gave me horrible side effects. I'd be willing to try Dianette or Yasmin because I've heard good things.
    • Open Bereavement
      Type: Loss of a Parent

My mother died a very long, drawn-out, painful death on 11/04/2003. Her agony had gone on for years.

      Treatments

      Crying Not Working
      Grief Counseling Somewhat Helpful
      Helping Others Somewhat Helpful
I actually did this when she was still alive. She had kidney disease and I volunteered at dialysis centers.
      Music Somewhat Helpful
      Sometimes makes me sad.
      Pets Working / Worked
My animals always make me feel better.
      Reading Working / Worked
There are some good bereavement books out there.
      Remembering Considering
I wish I'd done a better job of this. When my life settles a bit more, I'd like to write about her.
Support Groups Too Soon to Tell
I found a Motherless Daughters group, but they don't meet often.
      Time Working / Worked
    • Open Depression
      Type: Clinical (Major) Depression

Diagnosed with severe Major Depressive Disorder at age 15. It's been a problem since childhood.

      Treatments

      Paxil Not Working
      BAD side effects.
Positive Thinking Too Soon to Tell
      Prozac Somewhat Helpful
Not helpful at all without Wellbutrin.
      Psychotherapy Too Soon to Tell
Support from Friends & Family Too Soon to Tell
      Wellbutrin Somewhat Helpful
      Writing Somewhat Helpful
      Zoloft Working / Worked
Worked for a while, then turned me into an unfeeling zombie.

    • Open Anemia
      Type: Thalessemia Minor

      Treatments

      Iron Not Working
My ferritin remains low no matter how much I take. I still take iron, but only about 365% RDA.
    • Open Hypothyroidism

Diagnosed with Hashimoto's in 2003. My thyroid levels are *always* normal, but I am highly symptomatic. It's hard for me to get treatment.

      Treatments

      Cytomel Working / Worked
I was on a really small dose. I think I might have been better with a larger dose. My new endo took me off it completely.
      Synthroid Working / Worked
Worked at first. Hard to say if it's not working now or if my PCOS is acting up.
    • Open Physical & Emotional Abuse

Emotional abuse all through childhood. Only minor physical episodes. Have had destructive social relationships.

      Treatments

      Leave Working / Worked
      Estrangement works wonders.
      Music Somewhat Helpful
      Psychotherapy Somewhat Helpful
      Talking Somewhat Helpful
    • Open Tinnitus

It started at age 12 when I got the flu. It was accompanied by vertigo. I heard strange music for several days, and then one day the music was gone all I could hear out of my right ear was my pulse.

    • Open Medical Mysteries

I've been rather sickly since childhood. Most notable symptoms are hair loss (over 70%), tinnitus, extreme exhaustion, unexplained weight fluctuations, assorted skin problems, an ovarian tumor, poor memory, chronic depression, hyperinsulinemia, edema, pain in joints.

    • Open Bullying

I was severely bullied as a child. After I was bullied as an adult in the workplace, I developed PTSD. I think I've always had PTSD from childhood. I have a fairly brutal bullying story.

    • Open Lupus

Not sure I have lupus. I'm looking for information.
