Cystic Fibrosis Mood
Wednesday, November 5, 2008
So, Sunday I was at my mother-in-laws house and she mentioned to us that 2 of her brother's died from Cystic Fibrosis. One bother was a child, and the other died at 30. She informs us that she has the recessive gene for it and that my husband does too. Why she didn't tell us ANY of this when we were filling out the health questionnaire a few months ago for the fertility clinic, I do not know. I really, honestly, wanted to lay her out right there. My husband asked her when we were filling out those forms, not one word about anything. So very angry!!!!!! So, I called my doctor's office and spoke with my nurse. Now I have to go get tested to make sure that I do not have the recessive gene. I think both of my parents are cleared for this, but I'm not really sure (my family was never very good with keeping up with medical stuff). I'm trying to see if my insurance will pay for it. Kaiser says that if it is "Medically Necessary" then it will be paid for. I have to sit down with a preconception counselor and they will deem it medically necessary or not. I can't even go to my regular doctor, I have to go to the Genetics Lab. My RE office said that if my insurance won't pay for it, then I can get the test done there (which I will pay out of pocket). My RE doc also said that she wants to test me for all 75 mutations of the gene, not just the 24 that they usually test for. She wants to be absolutely positive that I don't have that gene anywhere in me. So now I am just waiting to hear back from Kaiser so I can make an appointment to talk with a counselor. Fingers crossed that I don't have the gene.

Oh Tammie, it stinks just finding this out now but certainly better now then later. I hope your insurance will pay for it or if not and you have to pay out of pocket it's not too expensive. Hoping and praying this is quickly resolved for you and you do not have the gene and your mind can be set at ease. Good luck!
