Feelings Fading Pt. 2 Mood
Tuesday, October 7, 2008 | A General Update story

I've been thinking more about my feelings towards my friend. And now I'm feeling more like maybe my feelings aren't fading so much as the "high" you feel when you first fall for someone is gone. You know, when you first fall for someone, you can't think about too much else other than them. You're kind of obsessed with them. Your hormones are crazy. And those are the things I don't feel anymore. I can get through a day without thinking about her a million times. But I still smile when I think about her, most of the time. I still think she's the greatest person. I still think she's drop-dead gorgeous. And she's still very special to me.

It's just that eventually your feelings calm down, as far as I've always heard. I've just never personally experienced that--I guess until now. I can still imagine a good relationship with her, though. But I still don't know what to expect when we see each other...there I go, smiling again over her kindness, gentleness, and how easy it is to be with and speak to her. I smiled just now because I saw myself smiling when I see her again because of all those qualities.

But now I can see why some people want to ditch a relationship when that "falling in love" high is gone. It seems like it'd be easy to drift apart and to feel less of a desire to make the relationship work, especially if there are problems.

When people first meet, one or both of you have this wonderful feeling that's really pretty close to infatuation. And then that either fades or matures into something else. So sure, you're right, that's when you begin to see problems- it's because you're not blinded by the intensity. And I think that's when you have to begin to decide about the nature of those problems and whether you'd want to face coping with them.
