Tina, I use to be a cutter years ago, when I was just married and when I became overwhelmed with stress I would cut...but thank God that the Lord healed me from this and it has been 10 years since the last time for me...I just want to tell you this to give you hope and to encourage you to keep in the faith and trust God to continue to strengthen you ...remember that He said, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my strength is made perfect in weakness...God's power is so powerfully displayed in us when we are the weakest, He shows himself strong on our behalf, for there that strength we receive is shown to us that it is not homebred, but heaven bred...be encouraged today, God is always near and ready to give the grace we need ...

    • Close Self-Injury

I started cutting by accident when I was 12. I used to suck on a pice of hard candy until it was razor sharp. One day I was playing and accidentally cut my hand with the candy. At first I was scared but then I tried it again and liked it. I started off just making small cuts on my hand for fun but later did it when I was angry or stressed. I sometimes used broken glass. I eventually progressed to razors and areas that could be hidden. I have only cut once in 3 years recently last month.

      Treatments

      Psychotherapy Somewhat Helpful
My therapist did research to help me because she was not very familiar with self injury. She followed the methods from S.A.F.E. I resisted heavily at first. The thought of not cutting was just to much. When she asked me to go 100 days without cutting I became extremely suicidal. It was only when they used more positive reinforcement and let me be the one to decide when to give it up did it really start working.
      Red Marker Working / Worked
I wasn't allowed to draw on myself but I was allowed to draw and paint pictures. Many times they would be of people with cuts and the cuts would be bleeding. This allowed me to see injuries and blood which I like without engaging in self harm
      Rubber Bands Working / Worked
I was given these to use in a psychiatric hospital when I was admitted for being suicidal. When I got out my therapist discouraged me from using them because she was using the S.A.F.E methods. I have personally alternated between using them and not using them. I like the pain. but sometimes it makes me want a razor more
      Talking Working / Worked
talking is the best way for me to keep from cutting. when I am mad or angry or upset I need to get it out at that moment. I always feel as if I am going to explode and when I cut it releases the pressure. I have found through the years that talking to the right person can do the same
      Prayer Working / Worked
probably the primary reason why I do not cut is because of a promise I made to God 3 years ago not to. To this day I have only broken it once
