About Me
I live with my daughter and her 2 daughters. My grandson is presently away at boot camp. I have another daughter that lives about 30 minutes away in one direction and a sister that lives 45 minutes in the other direction. I have a son who lives in New Hampshire with my grandson and an elderly man he cares for. I have been a clinical social worker for the past almost 20 years. I was a mental health and substance abuse counselor. I am also a friend of Bill W. for almost 20 years.

Close COPD & Emphysema
I was diagnosed with a tumor in my right lung that resulted in surgical removal of the lower lobe. It was not cancer. I have bullous emphysema (end stage) and COPD. This radical change in my health precipitated a move from my home by the ocean, the loss of my job/career and also my dog who became ill and had to be put down. My kitty cat is still living, as far as I know, in a no-kill shelter in Maine. I live in the family room of my daughter's home.
Treatments
- Advair Working / Worked
- I referred myself to a pulmonologist after being diagnosed with emphysema 5 years earlier. I had been given Advair but my FNP didnt recommend the appropriate doses. It has worked much better with proper supervision. I am now back to 250 from 500 for a long time and I have become congested for the first time in over a year. I will wait and see if it has to do with the changes from Maine air to Connecticut air.
- Ativan Working / Worked
- After my move to CT I began having anxiety attacks that began to get worse and more like panic attacks and my depression worsened at the same time. I used 1 10mg at bedtime to calm me enough to get to sleep. I stopped using it after about 4 months. I had about 4 or 5 days withdrawal symptoms.
- Benadryl Somewhat Helpful
- I use one of the PM acetaminophen brands to help with sleep now.
- Lexapro Somewhat Helpful
- My system is very sensitive. After attempting another antidepressant and feeling lethargic and spaced out I tried Lexapro. At 10 mgs I tend to feel somewhat lethargic and now use only 1/2 tab a day.
- Positive Thinking Somewhat Helpful
- I have lots of thoughts about the value of positive thinking. I dont think of it as magical thinking as it seems to sometimes be portrayed.
- Spiriva Working / Worked
- I think this works the best of all my treatments.
- Flonase Working / Worked
- I have found that using an allergy medication has had a big impact on my breathing. I am not congested as I was before.
Close Alcoholism
I have almost 20 years in recovery. I attend 3-4 meetings a week and would like to share with anyone who has a problem with addiction, especially to alcohol and nicotine.
Treatments
- 12 Step Program Working / Worked
- AA has taught me a way to live life on life's terms. Even with present day difficulties my life is far better than any day with alcohol.
