    • My first journal entry! Update

      Mood December 29, 2008 9:23am

Almost 10 months of t/h has challenged me like nothing else in my 56 years. The ringing persists with a few more tones and my sleeping is on and off. …

Hi Mark, Yes, the clicking keeps me awake or wakes me up every night for months. I tried Melotonin two nights ago (3 mg) and it stopped the noise for awhile and I slept so deeply for an hour. It was a blessed relief. But last night it didn't work at all and the clicking was horrible til finally I just got up and it subsided. Yes, I can stop the noise on great occasion by putting a small, hard pillow under my throat/jaw and turning my head to the right in an extreme way where my mouth is overhanging the pillow. The doctor says it's compressing a nerve to my face and stops the vibration. Can't leave it there for long as it's uncomfortable. I haven't tried a mouth guard so let me know how it goes, please. If you place your tongue lightly against your soft palate in different places when you hear the clicking, you may be able to feel the vibrations. This is what is causing my clicking. I feel them strongly at night. There is no doubt about it that I have PM. I've been accepted to the Colorado Neurological Institute for Movement Disorders and they are going to try to help me. My MRIs were all normal, so it could be a really really bad case of nerves that has set off this vibration which is deeply entrenched. I, too, am thankful for the the daytimes when it's manageable. And we can be glad we're not in physical pain, just emotional. Although sleeplessness does cause a certain amount of "pain". If you don't feel the vibrations then perhaps you have TMJ. My sister's tinnitus went away when she had her mouth splint installed for TMJ. Good luck! -Diana

Thanks for the hug, Mark. Your message was a rainbow. I, too, wasn't on any meds and now my bathroom looks like a drugstore. Ambien every night, Zoloft during day, lots of vitamins, blood pressure med, Klonopin (helps during the day, if I'm desperate enough, but not at night for some reason). Now I found out I have an elevated glucose (so I need to watch diet even more and exercise ever more intensely). The myringotomy to open the Eustacian tube did not help the clicking noise. The ENTs are encouraging more Botox treatments but I am afraid. They did another MRI of throat/face, and I'm waiting on results, looking for the cause of this palatal myoclonus. One man on DS is trying GABA powder supplements for his vibrations/clicking which is supposed to help something re brain nerves. I have nearly gotten "accustomed" to the noise during the day, but everytime I lie down it's like a typewriter! Very strange. I'm going to try yoga now every week as that does give a certain power over the mind. An Ayurvedic practictioner said I have a Vata imbalance, and the Chinese doc says I have a chi imbalance! My sister says I have a religious deficiency.... one has to have a sense of humor when dealing with T. Hope your new year is going well. --Diana
